Would you?
« on: February 15, 2019, 10:14:41 pm »
Hi all first post.
Currently run an 1150GS 2001 model.
I've seen for sale an 07 K1200GT with a full history and 64k on the clock.
Obviously I've read a bit about these bikes and their issues around the rad and camchain.
What's the collective thought please, walk away or by that mileage will it be sorted if the recalls have been done?
It has heated bits, electronic suspension and looks like cruise and abs.
Is abs on these the iabs that I did so well to avoid on the GS?

Thanks
Steve.

Hi Steve and welcome to the madhouse that is EuroKClub  8)

If you have read the various threads in this forum on the K12 vs K13 debate you already know the answer.

I believe the concensus to be 'walk away'.

It is easy to get mesmerised by the looks, the performance and the comfort. But you will get all of that, and more, on a K13. The 13 is a MUCH better bike and the prices are dropping all the time although they can be hard to find.

If you can't resist, make sure that ALL the recalls have been done; a full service history doesn't guarantee that.

If I only had enough funds for a K13 then yes that would be the bike of choice, interestingly some of the comments on the K section of the GS forum suggest if it has been well maintained and the recalls done then if anything else is likely to have shown up by that point. I'd definitely be steering clear of an 06 but this one was registered Aug 07 although I know I need to check the vin.

Whatever you do don't buy one with servo brakes.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

I wouldn't!

A 1300 - yes, but I wouldn't touch a 1200 with a barge pole.

If it's immaculate and under £2K I could be tempted. Otherwise no.

Well that's why you only pay 2K for one.

The K12s will only be kept going by people scavenging breakers yards. :(

If you have the funds to hand to fix a 1200 then spend them on a 1300!!

Right I think you've convinced me, it is up for 3k from Motorworks.
If you are saying more like 2k and steer clear then looks like I'm with the GS for a while longer, took the old girl out for a run today, nice but I just can't get comfortable and as much as the boxer is fun I like the smoother four, although ages ago I did ride a twin cam boxer which was better. Thanks for the input.

Save up the pennies and go for a 1300  ;D

Edit: I have just taken a look at the 1200 on Ebay, it has the wrong panniers for that bike, so it looks like a bitsa bike.

Perhaps we should change the name to the K13 owners forum 😜 Clearly my 06 K12 explodes in fiery ball of doom every time I go out on it 😂

Though not wishing to spend more on a 13 I'm probably bonkers and not fit to post a comment 😎 ;D

We have had some 12s that have been completely trouble free, but they are few and far between. In this particular case it was best to walk away. If anyone has their heart set on a 12 I would go for a 2008 onward.
