Cam chain tensioner
« on: November 03, 2023, 04:50:28 pm »
The cam chain tensioner was replaced on my K1300 GT today, as during the last service (a couple of weeks ago) there was a report of it "singing" on the overrun, although I couldn't hear it with a helmet on. It seemed to be a fairly simple job (at least it didn't take very long!).

54,000 miles on the bike now, and hopefully a good few more to come in future!

I always thought it was Kate Bush but maybe it was my cam chain tensioner.

Never heard of one singing before.

I thought they sing due to being too tight. And that's when you knock the tensioner back. But I'm no mechanic.  ::)

Well, too tight a chain certainly produces a noise at all speeds on my old Honda 4's. That though, is apparent even with a helmet on.

The dealership reported the issue on last service, as mentioned and, with a free replacement under the extended warranty, I'm not complaining.

My latest buy - a 1972 Triumph Trident, with a genuine 12,000 miles on the clock, produces a whole range of new sounds to get used to, most of them sounding like imminent doom. However, a friend who has both road and race bikes of the same type says it is actually quite a quiet example!
