2009 K1300R Cold Starting Issue
« on: September 07, 2021, 01:43:30 pm »
Well the issue is it won't start!

I thought it may have been the battery so popped it on the Optimate - all green lights but no joy. She tries to turn over but just dies. However when I put a booster pack on it fires up no problem. I have whipped the battery out and it is just over a year old and it checks out to be at full power - anything else I should be checking?

The only thing that is different is the power in the booster pack. Maybe a grotty terminal clamp that the clips from the booster are somehow tightening.

My money is on the battery having a dead cell or three but it is weird if the Optimate is not diagnosing it correctly.

Hi Do you have a multi meter?
Yes?
Check the battery under load.

Attached the meter across the battery with the ignition off. Connect -ve terminal then the +ve terminal on the DC setting. If fully charger it should read between 12.7 and 13.2 volts.
Now with the meter still connected press the starter and watch the meter reading. it should fall between 9.5 and 10.5 volts before the bike starts. If it isn't between those values its most likely on the way out or already shot.

I was thinking the battery but the Optimiser was leading me away from that - I only have a small battery tester but will be getting a Voltmeter before the weekend

Thanks for the time and replies :)

Shido

At the risk of pointing the obvious out, you’ll need a charger at some time...but hey that’s the way the battery lark is going anyway.

I’ve just swapped bikes around in the garage for a bike meet of Wednesday morning, just started the K ....the way they(lithium) spark the motor up is nothing short of remarkable.

my money is also on a bad battery , your optimate is reading surface charge which will lose a couple of volts when loaded.
my thoughts anyway. do check your terminals, but it's probably a battery.

So, I sent the videos to my local bike shop after a quick chat on the phone - he said the battery is knackered! He had a generic YTX 14BS on the shelf for 75€ HAPPY DAYS

Out of curiosity I called our lovely Motorrad stealer in Dublin (1 of only 3 on the Island) who wanted the reg, the chassis number and then asked for 234€ for a battery! I listened aghast as he went on to tell me if I wanted it fitted it would be another 35€ and I would have to book the bike in on Friday. I asked what type of battery it was expecting to be told lithium but he just said it was a black plastic one  :o  :o   :o    :o     :o  (he wasnt taking the mick either)

Needless to say I popped out the road and picked up the battery and will pop it in later on today - while I was there I asked about getting a lithium one and apparently like tires they are as rare chickens lips over here since the whole Brexit shenanigan's messed up supplies and deliveries

Thanks again for the time and advice as always

I had a new battery fitted to my 2010 K1300GT by the BMW dealer in March of this year (BMW Part No.61212346800) at a cost of 83.84 including Vat and it was fitted for free.

i got my last battery...coming 2 years ago from a honda dealer for £70 gbp so considering all that has happened i'd say you got a good deal there,
are batteries the only thing to have fallen in price?
we are certainly not spoiled for choice when it comes to dealerships here ...i don't even know where the third one is....

we are certainly not spoiled for choice when it comes to dealerships here ...i don't even know where the third one is....

  • Charles Hurst Belfast - I have used a few times for parts and a service and it's a good excuse for a bit of a spin as it is over an hours ride away. Always found the customer service top notch
  • Joe Duffy Dublin - for the most part they have the monopoly on sales and service in the Republic and with the skills of their salesmen and PCP finance deals you can see why there are so many new GS's out and about on the roads. I have NEVER had a positive customer service experience with parts or service but will probably end up buying from them in the future
  • Kearys Motorrad Cork - 3 hours away EXCELLENT customer service and have the south west of the country wrapped up - I do know people who will ride there from the North West (Sligo/Leitrim) for a service and to avoid the Dublin dealer. If Kearys can get me what I want when the time comes to change up I will make a weekend trip out of it :)

Oh! I almost forgot.... New battery in and bar a bit of faffing about with one of the screws not wanting to engage the bike cracked into life and is all set for a lunch time spin
