K13gt Deflection Plate
« on: August 13, 2021, 06:06:19 pm »
Hi,

While I was greasing up the rear suspension links (which looked well lubricated) I noticed some odd marking on both Deflection Plates.

Any ideas?

Martin

Loose bolts?
Missing spacers (says he who can't remember if there are any... ::) )
Swing arm bearings?

In my vast experience (of two K bikes) I've never seen those 'cancellation' stampings over the word FRONT before... :o

I suspect the bearings are shot on the bolt with the markings. Had similar on my K12S when they dismantled the rear end.

Do you mean the wear marks or the XXXX? Mine had the XXXX but not the wear marks (well not as deep).

There's some scratches & dings I wouldn't be happy with long term as they can act as stress raisers. These things are really cheap in breakers.  Personally I'd get another set that's a lot cleaner and torque them up properly with loctite on the nuts.  But that's just me.

Thanks for the information. My plan is to replace them when I find a set that looks half decent for sale.

Yes I was a little confused about the restamping of the front marks.

Looks like same part number for all K's so you will have a bigger chance of getting a good pair.

Realoem is a fantastic site and a great resource, second only to this site  :winkthumbs:

I've trawled the usual sources for second hand ones, but I've only seen grubby looking specimens. New is far too expensive and although the raise/lower sets are reasonable they don't make standard sets, so Plan B is make my own.

RealOEM IS great! I've been using it for both car and bike for many years.

The categorization of stuff never fails to make me feel like I'm spending twice as long as I should to find stuff, but I always find it!

Shame that we no longer have a version of REALOEM with UK prices.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Because of the location they will never look perfect even if they are only a few months old, that bit of the bike gets a lot of crap thrown at it.  The issue with yours are the scratches & a ding which looks like the bolts may have worked lose at some point.  From a purely structural integrity point of view, this looks OK.  I've always got good stuff from ebay de.

these do look easy to make.... perhaps out of some delicious stainless steel, polish up lovely.
i'd also be suspicious of something not right in there, check, clean and grease up those bearings ..possibly replace, those shouldn't be dear, any good bearing place should have them.
you could probably swap sides if you're a miserable git.... like me.

Quite a few used to make the riser plates to speed up K1300 steering.  Mine came from a German company complete with full TUV documentation.  Wouldn't trust a man in a shed with a bandsaw & mill. As an ex-automotive engineer was a bit shocked to see no loctite on the bolts.  BMW are relying on torque & bolt stretch only, which is ok if done properly with new bolts.  Think they recommend new bolts every time the plates come off.  I'd always use a bit of loctite to be sure.

Which is weird when you think they use threadlock on everything else on the bike...
