K1200 / K1300 Forum / Radiator getting blocked on the outside
« on: March 21, 2024, 06:01:36 pm »
Me again sorry ! Hopefully with some useful advice. Sadly I still have the cam cover leak which has been going on for weeks. However it takes me half an hour to get the cam cover off the bike now which is good, but I just wanted to show you something which amazed me considering I only cleaned the radiator flushed it through on the outside and made it really good and almost like new from the point of view of cooling. But the problem is I went out on the bike just the once and got caught in the rain and this is the result of that 30 mile journey in very light rain, but the roads being very very wet. So my advice for anybody who has one of these bikes is to get if you haven’t already a mudguard extender which I bought a while ago but haven’t fitted and I am now going to fit it, especially seeing this. As far as the cam cover leak is concerned, I will shave off a bit more of the cam chain guide as I didn’t take enough off and I will seal it on both sides of the gasket, especially in that corner. The rest of it is fine. It doesn’t leak anywhere else. I didn’t put any sealer on top side of the gasket where the cam cover fits, so this time I will do top and bottom of the gasket and then see how it works after filing flush the cam chain guide flush with the head I mean.

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Rear suspension link bearings
« on: March 02, 2024, 03:37:00 pm »
Cam gasket leak sorted I moved on to rear suspension link bearings.  Curiosity killed the cat !! However once again Bodgit and Scarper have been paid to put there incompetent hands on another repair.

Just 1 of the needle rollers has failed and found to be seized but with a bit of heat and a drift it came out. The bush will go again but the needle roller is toast.

Part’s sourced from simplybearings.co.uk. Cheaper than Motorworks and a main dealer.

K1200 / K1300 Forum / How to stop your rear shock spring going rusty
« on: February 12, 2024, 06:42:20 pm »
At it again  ;D

To prevent the spray from the rear tyre causing issues rusting my rear spring I came up with a cunning plan. I removed the hugger and fitted a mud flap. When I bought the hugger I thought it would stop it but it falls short. Tell me what you think it was a £6 fix

Also I fitted the bung on the hugger (on the left) that stops the hugger from vibrating from eBay you get several in a pack ££7.75

K1200 / K1300 Forum / K1300s rad cleaning
« on: February 12, 2024, 06:30:05 pm »
During the odd poor English weather I notice fan coming on more than normal so I decided to investigate turned out I needed to clean the rad initially removing some panels. Which all became a ball ache especially if you have a jet wash. So I came up with this idea to back flush the rad externally then I found this gem to use and no need to to strip any plastic off.

You can get the nozzle in through the fairing to wash dirt the way it came in. It works really. So after a ride min the rain when I get homes I rinse it over and no need for jet wash plus can do it in the garage too.

And the temp gauge went down and remained so since

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Quick Shift bearing failure
« on: February 11, 2024, 07:07:14 pm »
After buying my K1300s anni in November 2023 the bike was delivered after the dealer (independent) had finished doing some repairs, long story short after a couple of months I notice what can only be described as dirty coolant brown appearing over the starter casing. I finally discovered is was rusty oil coming from the top QS shaft seal. The seal may have been replaced at some point or could be original not sure. The shaft was wobbly I asked other owners if their shaft was lose too. All said no there was no play. So I dug the seal out and to my horror found the top bearing had gone rusty and disintegrated. I then took the QS top assembly off and water had contaminated the oil inside rotting the bearing. I bought a bearing online and replace it along with the seal.

At this point I want to say I was experiencing random gear changes that were jerky and clunky replacing the bearing has cured this.

The pro was that the shaft seal had not been fitted correctly, so the seal wasn’t on the shaft far enough so seal edge wasn’t touching the shaft making a seal. Worth checking yours as it has to be a fair way on about 3 mm maybe more so be warned. I’d put images up but can’t seem to add them.

Help needed so I can show you !  Hope this helps.

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Cam Cover Leak
« on: February 06, 2024, 08:31:12 am »
Hi all
I have a 2013 30th Anniversary Edition.  Went for run and when got home found I had an oil leak. Bike was laid up for 8 weeks.  Now a leak.

I noticed that the cam cover retaining bolt rubber seal have all gone hard so I am going to buy the 8 rubbers but for now replace them Hoping it might pull the cover down further.  I’ll keep you posted.
