I was going to suggest cycling would be a more approporiate means of transport.
Ebikes would get you round in no time.

Or a (legal) scooter:

You know you want to.

Don’t know about bikes, but it’s silly money to take a car across on the ferry. Many moons ago I was an instructor for Star Rider and one of the other instructors drove the IoW ferry from Lymington as his day job. I remember his story about how the harbour master would stand on the end of the pier, so he’d leave going full astern to slow down to the very last moment in an attempt to get him to move back. That didn’t end well, and he ended up shortening the jetty by about 6’.

For a bike it's £53 return.

There are great walks, beaches, chines (small, steep-sided valleys along the coast) and plenty of 'touristy' things but great biking roads are not among the attractions.

It's only about the size of the New Forest but I guess by combining both areas you could get a decent few days, especially if you get off the bike and walk. I know, I know...

I have been to the Isle of Wight a couple of times but not on the bike. I have planned a wiggly route that is about 90 miles.
Just something I was thinking about for the future.

I definitely don't think of the IoW as a destination and seeing as it is an island, it isn't really en-route to anywhere except the ferry back to the mainland. As I say, and you know if you've been, there are plenty of attractions for a few days. I certainly wouldn't go there via ferry for the roads. Even when I lived less than an hour away, I never chose to go there on the bike. I think it would make an excellent cycling place, so that lets you and me out...

I went there on school holiday trips a couple of times and remember this old poster:

The unique Eight Wonders of the Isle of Wight are:

Cowes you can't milk
Freshwater you can't drink
Newport you can't bottle
Needles you can't thread
Winkle Street where there are no winkles
Ryde where you walk
Lake where there is no water
Newtown which is very old

It'll be interesting to see the trip report if you do decide to go.

I sailed there whilst on a stag do learning not to crash a 36ft yacht thing. I can confirm they have ice cream. Or they did seven years ago.

I seem to recall hearing somewhere that the IoW ferry is the most expensive, per mile travelled, in the world!
Correct rear brake use is scientifically proven to shorten stopping distances in EVERY road situation.

In my experience I find that the Isle of Wight has one of the highest densities of cars of most areas in the UK.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

A lady friend who lived on the island but worked on the mainland bought two cars, one she left on the island, the other she left on the mainland and crossed every day as a foot passenger. Worked very well till she forgot the keys for the mainland car one day  :)
