How’s This for BMW Extortion
« on: January 14, 2022, 06:32:34 pm »
Had to have a new mirror put on my Motorsport. At the same time, I thought I'd replace the slightly scratched blue and red stripe decal on the left hand fairing. Ordered it and STUPIDLY didn’t bother asking how much.

BIG MISTAKE

This paper stick on decal, measuring about fifteen inches long and maximum two inches wide cost £45 plus vat.

Is that what they call quantitive easing??? 😱

Another punter that thought owning a BMW was cheap. 45 quid sounds like a bargain  ;D
Whenever I went into a BMW dealers I thought I had had a result if I came out spending less than 300 quid  ???

I dropped my Motorsport almost at a standstill and not only needed the stickers but the fairing side panel as well. You can probably imagine the cost. That comes unpainted. BMW wanted £600 to get it painted. I have a set of RG crash bungs in the shed, still cant bring myself to cut a hole in the fairing to fit them...

Tip for anyone with a motorsport - these kind of bits are becoming rare so if you see one it might be an idea to grab it and tuck it away just in case.

Any decals for almost any vehicle are always horrendously expensive. A new white flank stripe for my Ford Escort Mexico cost me £15. In 1973-4'ish.

Almost no one does after market decals (other than sponsor's decals) hence the cost.

You failed to let us know whether the car was faster after adding the new stripe.  :adolf:

This sends me back to having the S1000RR repaired. Was also the idiot Motorsport colours and so was more "applying decals and sealing" than "painting" and had to be done at least twice as it turns out applying decals is difficult for certain people/fools.

Am I remembering incorrectly or were the other non solid colours such as the blue or the tricolour actually painted, or decals too?

I’ve got all three of those bikes, the Motorsport, 30th Anniversary and HP. The fairings are basically just covered in their respective decals which are then lacquered over, so it’s not just a matter of removing the damaged decal and sticking the new one on.

I do wonder if a better alternative to having three of the same bike in the garage, would have been to just buy the replacement fairings and belly pans and just changing them over whenever the fancy took me. It would have been cheaper I suppose! Just 😀

Mind you, I think they are a thing of beauty in there as a group so there is a method in my madness. Sod the expense.

If possible, I have the decals custom made, which is still cheaper than those directly from BMW.

No, but it looked better...

It was, however, considerably faster after slotting a Big Valve Twin Cam engine in from a Lotus Elan   8)

Shame you didn't fit your RG bungs, they would have saved you a small fortune.
I have them fitted on my K1300s, and when I dropped it at a standstill (as you did) there was absolutely no damage to the bike, the bung saved the panels fron contacting the ground.
I actualy like the look of them.

The real tradgedy is that the K1300S didn't come with crash bungs as standard. A bike that weights over a quarter of a tonne is going to fall over at some point.
Correct rear brake use is scientifically proven to shorten stopping distances in EVERY road situation.

Fit panniers - they're more useful than bungs.

I wouldn't know myself of course, but a friend said they do the same job at low speed / stationary drops.  ::)

Yup,  Previous owner had a drop with panniers, they leave the side panels untouched but chamfer the very tip of the blister beside your hands.  I've seen a few headlight fairings on ebay perfect like mine save for the corner neatly ground off.
