Also known as Kemble airfield today, not sure if I was impressed or sad looking at at the British Airways 747’s lining up to be scrapped retired this August , and maybe the last decent weather, but a jolly good day out all the same,on a bike of course  :D

Both good and bad memories of Kemble.

Great pubs just down the road, The Wild Duck Inn at Ewen and one off the beaten track is The Tunnel House Hotel at Sapperton. Long drive is not very bike friendly but the pub is.

Standing on top of a Britannia at RAF Lyneham in 1969 with a pair of binoculars checking the HF aerial tensioner (no, really) when I spotted the Red Arrows practicing out of Kemble. Turned the glasses their way just in time to see the display go all pear-shaped and a large pall of smoke rise ominously. One Gnat flew through some trees and the pilot was apparently auto-ejected (who knew) and killed.

See the last jumbo’s finished today, one of which has gone to Kemble.
