Drive shaft seal
« on: July 24, 2023, 09:51:27 pm »
Hi all,

Bike has been faultless until it was parked up in the garage for a week then on its first trip to work i noticed a damp patch around the circular plastic cover on the diff side of the wheel and a little run of oil under that running toward the brake caliper. I wiped it off and checked it again over the next few days and it doesnt seem to be running down now and can only put it down to the seal relaxing maybe?

Was thinking of just keeping an eye on it but if its stating to leak i would assume it will only get worse.

Is there a cause to this seal leaking, like play/movement in a wheel bearing (although i cant feel any) or is it simply a failing seal?

It isn't dripping all over the back wheel or anything but i would rather change the seal so wondered if anyone can recommend a supplier for said seal?

Thanks,
John.

How’s the gearbox oil screw plug? There’s a copper washer that may be on its way out. The plug is on the bottom of the gearbox facing the front of the bike. That’s the only oil that I can think of back there.

The seal just on the inside of that plastic cap  needs replacing an easy job

Here are the details. You may find from the seal size that they’re commercially available

Part No 33117722890
Shaft seal
59,8X75X8

Mine leaked quite badly after the rear flange was replaced under warranty/recall. It was enough to notice and keep an eye on but after a few hundred miles on the Wrinklies trip it sealed itself up and never appeared again.

Had the same problem about a year ago on my GS1200 which uses the same seal.

I used one of these :-   https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/404260389956

It is 0.2mm larger dia than the BMW one but has been fine on the GS & not leaked any more.

So guess the BMW one is not a standard common size.
Wonder why they would have done that?
Could be why the BMW one is about 10 times the cost.

Is that a whiff of cynicism in the air Philip? Folks have been banned for way less than that you know...(insert your winky/smiley icon of choice in here, mine have stopped working again).

I had this problem on my K1300GT last year, noticed following a service after the lengthy ride home.

I called the dealer to buy a seal and they offered to supply and fit it free of charge, under the extended warranty that I still maintain. They did this as promised the next day, and so far there have been no further problems.

The bike is a 2010 registration and the mileage at that time was around 52,000.

Will do.

Going to ring the BMW dealer yet again for the 5th time in the morning just to see what they charge for doing this seal, service or parts just don't seem to answer the phone  :o

Look, just stop pestering the poor stealers. They are not there to deal with your nonsense, unless of course you want to buy a bike...

Mine was in the workshop for around 45 minutes, so I would think that 3/4 hour of labour (at whatever rate they are using) and the oil will be in the right area.

If you can't speak to your dealer, you might want to try Garry (Service Manager) at Sycamore Peterborough, it's not too far from you I imagine?
