I once had a short dalliance with a lovely young lady. Turned out she wasn't a lady but more of the company bike.

In my defence, she was lovely and I was new in them that parts  ::)

I hasten to add our place don't provide a company bike, and I've never worked in any sales job where anyone gets near the "on target earnings" advertised expectation

Not even of the dalliance variety? What has become of the Motor Trade since I left it.......?

I would be tempted to retire and take the Falmouth job if it weren't for the quite startling turnover of some very good people (and a couple of duds) including managers. Not sure what it is but something or someone is obviously not easy to get on with.

It can happen to the best.

This time last year I was in the pricess of changing the car and ended up having to have major work done by my long-time (17 years) Audi dealer in Swindon on a car supplied by a non-Audi dealer.

Both swimbo and I had had many Audi's from them and serviced by them and generally I could never fault them. At the time, the entire, virtually new dealership building was having to be re-roofed due to a major design flaw that caused a similar building to collapse on the showroom and workshop cars!!!

So, I was making allowance for the fact that the staff had to come in an hour before opening time in their scruff gear, clean the dust and debris made by the builders who were working night shifts and then get washed and changed ready for the customer stampede.

My experience was a catalogue of disasters from the very first contact; second contact actually, the first, on a crowded Saturday morning, was faultless and efficient.

When all was finally finished, 6 weeks later, and I got my car back, I wrote a scathing report to the head of business listing the disasterous handling of my repairs and complaints together with those of other irate customers whose stories were garnered from the hours spent sitting in the waiting room chatting to them.

I received a very nice e-mail suggesting I popped in when I was next in town as he didn't want to discuss the report over the phone and thought e-mail rather a fob-off. As I was test-driving another car on the morrow (with the intention of getting rid of my current, recently acquired and repaired ex-track day car asap) we agreed to have a chat.

I was welcomed, brought coffee and made comfortable and after a few pleasantries he stunned me by saying he had resigned his position. What, because of my report? Well, not quite but rather because my report summed up every single thing that he 'knew' was going wrong in the dealership. And others in the group as it happened. I used to do this sort of audit and report thing as a living so I was fairly sure I knew where the blame lay.

Now this guy was in his late forties, had never worked anywhere else but the top end of the motor trade and thought he knew how to run a very successful business. And with some justification I would add. So, what had gone wrong.

The Inchcape Group, who own his business, had decided that they knew better than him and his colleagues and started taking his well-oiled machine apart.

Out went the immaculate, mature, impeccably dressed and stunningly polite ladies of a certain age who manned reception and controlled the showroom with ruthless efficiently and beguiling smiles.
In came a nervous, callow yoof of a girl who didnt' know how to smile at all, let alone beguilingly.

Out went half of the service advisors and in came the start of my problems.

Out went the Customer Care Manager who dealt with me so efficiently on my first visit with the problem car and she was forced to go back to being just one of the service advisors. She left within the week for a major competitor across town at a much higher salary with a remit to do for them what had been doing for Swindon Audi.

Out went the workshop running at 85% capacity so they had spare for drop-ins, accidents and emergencies.
In came 100% capacity and a flood of complaints about waiting times, technical problems and a distinct lack of customer care.

Out went all the trivial identity stuff such as Swindon Audi key fobs, document wallets and number plate advertising.
In came Inchcape branding with no differentiation between Inchcape's Audi, Jaguar, Porsche, Land Rover or other marques.

And so it went on. And on. And on.

The top man is now top man at a BMW dealership in Cardiff, is given free reign to manage his business how he likes, to achieve his group's goals and looks back on his departure from Inchcape with relief.

Of course, the guy who took his place soon realised that he wasn't running the show and started making noises about leaving also.

How to ruin a great business model by letting the bean-counters and top dogs loose on the 'How' of the business instead of them concentrating on the 'What'.

Move to North Oxford then. That was from their mechanics advert:
https://www.bmwgroupretailcareers.co.uk/job/oxford/motorcycle-technician/18386/6645809

Or just use that info to get one, but up north!

Mind you, nobody promised it was a BMW company bike:
"Here's your C90, sunshine."
