Having trouble with new Tomtom Rider 500
« on: December 30, 2021, 08:14:48 pm »
Good evening all and I hope you have all had a merry Christmas and are looking forward to the new year.

I have just bought a new Tomtom Rider 500 direct from Tomtom.

As is usual with North American Tech I cannot understand any of the “support” information.

To begin they have included a USB cable but I cannot see anywhere on the device where I can plug it in. This being so is the only way I that I can charge it is to plug in into the bike? Is there no way that I can charge it via my computer’s USB port? It can take up to five hours to fully charge. I have been for a ride and after filling up the device would not start up so I have taken it home, connected it direct to the wiring loom and it will now only power up after a couple of minutes with the engine running. This leads me to think that some of my earlier connections were not good so the device no longer has sufficient charge to power up.

My previous Tomtom which was a Start25 car sat nav that lived in a waterproof case used to tell me when it was charging but this new Rider 500 makes no mention of whether or not it is charging. Am I missing something?

I have tried to connect it to my home computer’s WI-FI. It faffs about, tells me that it has connected then says that there is a problem. Letting me know what the problem is seems to be too much bother for the device. Out of interest I am using my router’s password which I believe is the correct one to use.

I didn’t have any of these problems with the old Start 25 so will be grateful for any help you can give me. 2022 seems to be a year too far for this old codger!!

I will be grateful for any words of wisdom

My Tomtom 450 Rider has the USB port covered by a waterproof cover. You just need to uncover it.

Correct rear brake use is scientifically proven to shorten stopping distances in EVERY road situation.

Before I go into this in detail, I would strongly suggest that you read the user manual.
Is the unit a 500 or a 550?
Also there are some very good Tomtom official videos on Youtube.

Thank you all for your help. I have put my glasses on and have finally located the USB port under its waterproof cover hidden under the wings that lock the device to its ram mount. I could find the SD card port but not the charging port! Oh well, got there in the end!

Problems, for now, are over. My Drive is down so I can’t connect it to Wi-Fi or set up my account but hopefully all will be well tomorrow.

Happy New Year one and all and let’s hope we will be free to wander home and abroad for 2022.

Best wishes,
Tony

My Drive refers to the Tomtom web based planner and your routes, My Drive Connect in the program on your computer. Confusing I know. Why they couldn't give them names the don't sound the same goodness knows. MyDrive connect has limitations you really are best connecting to your home wifi.

Thanks Rae. I will have another go at connecting to my home WiFi tomorrow. With any luck TomTom will have resolved their connectivity problems by then.

Cheers,
Tony

You also need to log into your Tomtom MyDrive account on the device. If you haven't got one, create one.

Oh yeah that Connected thing was a right pain. One does it so infrequently one forgets which menu to go to re sign in again, what!

Anyway I need to fix my 3d printed nav mount is what this has reminded me!

Just stay signed in all the time Matt, when you spark up the Tomtom it connects to your WiFi and Tomtom account automatically.

If you need WiFi while out and about just use your phone as a WiFi hotspot. You can register more than one WiFi connection on your Tomtom and it connects to which ever one is nearest or strongest or it might be the last one it connected to.
