K1200 / K1300 Forum / Should I be worried?

The Winter muck on my bevel box is now highlighting a slight oil stain around the spindle. Is this the reason why the casting is painted black or am I looking at the first stage of seal failure?

On the bright side, if the seal needs changing, I will have an opportunity to change the final drive ratio.

K1200 / K1300 Forum / K1300GT Business Use Logbook

I've started this topic to record the ups and downs of using the bike for business.

I'm having a quiet start to the year, so only 772 miles to date at an average of 53.4MPG. Most of this has been done without panniers fitted. I'll refit them when I have my first overnight stay then leave them on for a similar mileage for comparison purposes.

No point in posting running cost until  the bike has a few services under its wheels.

First revelation: the trip computer.
I suppose it would have been too much to expect a useful MPG reading!

A marvel of teutonic logic: this device appears to calculate consumption in litres per 100km to the neares 0.1 then converts it back to MPG: hence the irregular jumps in MPG.

Calculated MPG from brim to brim shows the trip computer is  6%  optimistic. The tank range calculated by the trip computervaries by about the same amount. Assuming the tank volume is a usable 24 litres, calculated range is around 285 miles. When I have a safe opportunity, I will check this in real life.

Who's Who? / Business use: am I the only one

Hi All!

Another newbie.

Since becoming self-employed ten years ago, I've chosen to use BMW bikes for business travel (around 28000 miles per annum).

I buy secondhand and low mileage bikes.

Cost of ownership is key, so I quickly learned to avoid BMW Franchised dealers.

My most recent aquisition a K1300GT 2010 arrived last week with 30000 miles on its odometer.

Electronic toys suggest 54mpg at near UK legal speeds. Reality is 52mpg but only over the first two fills.

I'm intrigued by the possibility of changing the final drive ration in the quest for higher economy.

Has anyone done this before?
