This year I made my last visit to Iceland and therefore the CCM had to go.
What would I replace it with?
Well this is the new companion for the K1300S.

I hope they get on well together.

Yay! Matching Motorsport colours, me too!

So far no arguments.

Ooo ooo - is that a borrow or a purchase, Matt?

Good work, that man!
The K is going I guess? Or are you going to be keeping the stable, so to speak?
-
Thanks :). It's quite mad.
The K stays for now, don't think I want to 'spoil' the S feeling by commuting on it. Plus it might end up sitting on slicks if I go completely mad!
-
Nice bike Matt. :) And still young enough to mount it with no pain. Enjoy.
Too late for most of us old farts.
-
Two very nice combinations, both proving the n+1 formula for the number of bikes a person needs.
-
Am I the only one who didn't get the winning numbers?
And Jon's right, straddling a razor blade is not for the creaky 8)

I think, from reviews, etc, apart from the peg height, it's a comfy bike.
Matt will no doubt tell us!
Does it take panniers, Matt?
And not forgetting Tom - correct spec & colour scheme. Tick.
Like the 'ring sticker too. ;D

Having said that, this has just joined the Phmode stable...

Yeah, I remember you saying. But that was when they were cutting edge... 8)

Bloody hell. 9,600 miles. It's been in a very clean shed somewhere. It's got cleaner wheels than my K.
Nice one, Brian! Quite a trip to fetch, or is it coming down to you?
Anybody else want to declare a new love?
-
It's coming to me, £180 collected and delivered.
The 'clean' story is contained in the seller's description...
"I have for sale my early RS. I purchased the bike last year from a gentlemen who had owned the bike for 40 years. He bought the bike from Lotus Norwich with only 700 miles on the clock, I have the purchase receipt to prove. The first owner only covering 700 miles. The bike was used on a regular basis up until 1983 when it was put into dry storage, fuel tank and carbs drained of petrol and filled with deisel to stop any corrosion. This is how the bike comes with such low mileage. Over this period the origional exhaust system rotted out which I replaced, whilst the bike was up on the bench I took off the heads and barrels to check the condition, the bores were in perfect condition with no wear. At this point I fitted new pushrod tube rubbers and piston rings and lapped in the valves as a precaution. When I purchased the bike it was fitted with Lester alloy wheels, a BMW option at the time. However it came with the origional coachlined spoked wheels and these are probably the best unrestoed examples I have seen and are in lovely condition. As you see the bike in the photos the bike is up and running very sweetly gearbox and clutch are spot on as is the engine no smoke or nasty noises. Under the seat the tool kit, pump and lock are all present as is the service book and handbook, just as it came out of the factory. The bike is sitting on brand new Avons and tubes and everything works except the clock, the wires to the clock are in excellent condition so it looks like the clock is kaput. Although I have nothing to prove the mileage, I know my way around these airheads and every where on the bike switch gear hand grips foot rubbers wiring etc. all points to a very low usage bike, also I have no reason to doubt the word of the gentleman I bought the bike from. So what we have here is a very early R100 RS, blue callipers with coach-lined wheels in very nice, mostly origional condion and also MoT and tax fee as it is now classed as an historic vehicle."
The DVLA currently says that the bike is untaxed and that the tax is due on 1st July 1981! So the elderly gentleman obviously got his dates wrong, it was never on the road (at least legally) from the end of June 1981.
And this bike and I have met before...way back in 1978.
I had always wanted an RS since I first saw one in the flesh, this very bike, outside my local Lotus dealership in Norwich 1978. I had a friend who worked there and as I was between jobs (I had just left the RAF) he had me cleaning the cars on the forecourt to keep me out of mischief and when the company owner came out and asked me what I was doing (he did after all, pay an old geezer to do that), he said I should clean the bike too, which I did many times. I never established back then, whether the bike was his or whether they had taken it in part exchange for a new car but the owner certainly rode the bike.
It was really freaky to find 'my' RS up for sale and I'm trying to contact the original owner, now retired and living abroad to get a little more of the story.
Three bikes in the man cave and can't ride any of them... 8)

Two of which have been discontinued... plus your rain suit too, of course, which makes three anyhow 8)

You harsh harsh man. Made me laugh though. :P
-
Excellent story, Brian!
Add your description to his, and you can create a very nice history of the bike for the next owner.
I've also sold and bought back a bike - about 5 years and 40k miles later.
Bad news was that it wasn't as good. But it was very sweet to get it back.
-
What a coincidence Brian and obviously meant to be. Looks in absolute great nick for it's age. :)
-
It looked a little dodgy at first, forty years of no history at all; no tax records, no MoT certificates, no intervening service history....
But when you take a close look at the footrest and pedal rubbers, seat, grip rubbers, stickers under the seat etc. etc. and put that with the little verbal history it has and the HPI and DVLA records, it seemed like a genuine bike. Buying a bike from 'Lotus in Norwich' seemed odd at first till I realised he meant Norfolk Motor Company, then a Lotus and Alfa dealer.
Anyway, my Honda sat in a mate's garage for 22 years (and how I wish I had been clever enough to drain the tank and carbs and fill 'em with diesel, pure genious!) and that was a genuine 8,000 miler, so they are out there.
I have a photo of the bike with the original rotted exhaust system on, so that bit was also genuine.
RS prices on t'internet have been going silly for a few years now and I was too late to catch a really nice black one a few weeks back and then this one came up.
I wasn't going to bother to bid when the price got to £4,600 with a couple of hours to go (I don't know why folks bother? I never bid till the last few seconds on anything!). I was watching the Russian Grand Prix on the recorder when my phone alarm went off to remind me to place my bid...and although I wasn't now going to bother, I checked the auction anyway.
I was amazed to find the top bid had gone back down to £3,600 and with only 15 seconds left I hastily put my bid together and hit submit with 3 seconds on the clock and was delighted to find it was mine.
It turned out the original high bidder threw a wobbly when he discovered the Lester alloys weren't included and withdrew his bid. It wasn't clear from the ad whether they were, but I had assumed they weren’t. I have since bought them for £150 (complete with original tyres) to keep the bike's provenance going. I'll never fit them as the spoked wheels are gorgeous but it keeps the story together for future owners.
Of course, there are bound to be niggles and I'm not too sure about 40 year old brake hoses. Anyone? :D
-
Nice story, Brian. Congratulations on your new purchase ! 8) 3 seconds can make a hell of a difference ;)
-
This thread is great! Good work Bri!
Are you going to build a showroom? :)
-
Bought our first RS which was V reg and travelled Europe muchly on it met a guy on the Calais/Dover ferry who assured me the last ones made had a heavier crank so bought this but in southern climes needed the bottom half of the fairing off.

Sod the BMW - that's a Laverda RGS Executive next to it! :-* :-* :-*
Now THAT is the bike that a K1300S channels, IMHO. But with comfort thrown in for the modern bike, obviously.
The Executive variant is as rare as hen's teeth.
Excellent photo, Chris - thanks!

I'm not sure I’ll need to 'unfrock' her in the green isle Chris but the bit about the heavier crank is interesting...
Of course, being a '77, mine has absolutely none of the later refinements; no Brembos, no integral brake master cylinder, no oil cooler, no 'tronic ignition, no twin plugs, no nuffink! But it is a classic!
Of course, just after I moved house 2 years ago I threw out all my 'tools' for such a beast; Dwell meter, Carbalancer, CO tester, Strobe light, Sparktune. Who needs old fashioned rubbish like that in the 21st century...
Ho hum 8)

Photo was taken in the Cevenne in the mid 80's the guy with the Laverda is a life long mate and he only sold it a few years ago but still has 3 other triples.
I've agonised over a R90s for years but as I've my own long term classic assuming I live long enough and XT660X that has currently gone up by £1500 in the last 2 years that will have to do.
My contribution to the missing tools if your passing.

Now, that is a nice bike Chris. :) If only BMW made them like that nowadays, I'd be sorely tempted to come back to the fold.
-
I'll be intrigued to see how Tom gets on to which bike is at the top of the food chain.... these two currently fight it out at the top of ours the one at the back is a GT.

Hopefully the only update for a while, new levers:

I popped in to get the charging cable and mentioned the clutch lever reach being suited to a big German hand. Bam. I had such a nicer ride home, everything feels better now.

Accessory envy is a very dangerous slope... 8)

The K levers are both adjustable for span but the S only has that on the throttle. So you see my dear fellow I had no choice. I had no choice!

This makes 2 K's less on the next wrinklies trip ?

The S throttle is adjustable for span? I'm well impressed 8)

Hahaha you're supposed to read between the lines! And the words and the letters! And above and around them too!
As for next year, probably still the K as how can I carry my... Monopoly board and commemorative lead figurines on the S?!
