Just had an issue with the ESA. Couldn't move the preload, rider, rider and luggage etc. Had it re-programmed at Marshals at Grimsby and now toggles through ok. So in my case it was the electronics.

They don't want to touch them. The dealer I bought my FJR from refused point blank to take the K1200GT in part exchange. "Too much trouble" he said.

One of the things that goes with the miles is the wiring loom to the front shock. Not covered! But, they will sell you, and fit for you at enormous cost, a repair loom. Mind, most dealers don't even know it is available as a part.

Reminds me of the days when the day of the week it was made determined the reliability of the vehicle..

Can't really comment on this bike due to low mileage, but my previous bikes (Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Yamaha) always just worked and i never had any reliability problems with any of them on the daily commute in all weathers.
The only issue was the rider who in his younger days preferred life on his arse sliding down the road.

I can comment on BMW cars, i have a 2007 5 series which on the forum i belong to are either working perfectly or are money pits, luckily mine is the former.

I agree. The wiring loom will only NOT fail if you don't use the bike. Every movement of the fork, up, down, left and right puts strain on a non-reinforced loom 😡

OK, I think you've convinced me, its a shame, I really really wanted to buy a K1200GT but basically it would appear they are an expensive, unreliable piece of $hit  :(

The K1300GTs are a much better bet, lots of the issues had been sorted by the time they were released.

There are a few 20-40k mileage examples for sale at around £5000 on an 09 plate. On the face of it a lot of bike for the money.

That has given you something to think about, and obviously the lower the mileage the better as long as it's not been sat for ages.

The overriding messages here are pretty exclusively get a K13 over a K12, the 12 being the development mule for the 13. Even then they're not perfect but a much better bet.
Late emerging biker - took the first bike plunge at 50 with a 12GT : swapped for a 13S 9 months in... then got my mitts on a lovely 2014 13R Dynamic in rrrrrracing rrrrred! Then the COVID came along... so I upped it to France and bought a V85TT... O Sole Mio etc etc!
