... but also confirmed my lack of joy and desire to repeat the experience.

That statement covers every aspect of my motorcycling maintenance experiences.

Actually, I lie. There was a memorably pleasant moment when I found a short in a Laverda wiring harness. That was truly pleasurable.
Unlike the two weeks of searching for it prior to that.

I bypassed the Angel GTs in favour of the Avon Spirit ST
:thumbsupgood: :thumbsupgood: :thumbsupgood:
I will consider them too, in that case.

[Edit: how do you find them, Rae? For feel in the dry, the wet, and also longevity? Ta.]

The further away you stand the better it looks...

I've heard people whisper that near me before now.

'Demanding road for motorcycles". James Bond eyebrow(s) raised. Shades back on.
Love it!

Four things come to mind:
- fantastic weather
- fantastic roads and scenery
- zero potholes in Italy/Alps (some tarmac cracking here and there, admittedly, but then again they have more extreme weather to contend with)
- was the Benny Hill chase music not available?

All in all, great work, and well worth it.

Updating this thread for those interested. The list is still being kept up to date. New url for extra words too.

https://som.yale.edu/story/2022/over-1000-companies-have-curtailed-operations-russia-some-remain

Url says 2022 but it's got a 2024 last update thing.

And to save time searching:
  • Pirelli        suspend new investments in Russia and scale back production (note Pirelli owns Metzeler too, by the way)
  • Michelin    suspended all operations in Russia

'Scale back' = so they supply just Russia & Belarus presumably, since no one else should be buying them? Who knows, but it doesn't read like Pirelli are covering themselves in glory.

They've missed out on two pairs from me so far, and will miss out on a third pair, come May. It's Michelin pour moi.

I like the fact that John of Bennetts got hold of Paul Varnsverry (probably the top UK PPE expert) so quickly to respond, and add some vital perspective.
Paul was citied in the FortNine video, but somewhat out of context.

Also kudos to David's Old Gits group for spotting both of these - I should have credited them in the first post.
An intelligent discussion!

You'll get both entertainment and education in equal measure.

Oh without a doubt Rich it was a bad overtake in the first place. I also think the oncoming car could have squeezed over a bit.

Agreed. They were probably looking at their phone/satnav/infotainment centre. And bikes next to pantechicons probably look quite small from far away.

Two eejits meeting at one point in time and space. But the two-wheeled one was the bigger eejit, placing all trust in another road user.

The bike doesn't seem to speed up through the overtake which looks odd to me - there was no rush to complete the overtake until the last half second. Maybe - being generous - he had a mechanical issue?

Extremely unpleasant to watch.
My thoughts are with his toes.  :(

Boots aren't the problem - lack of assessment & planning is.

He managed to tick at least 6 of Roadcraft's overtaking key safety points (let alone the ones about the right clothing).

Overtaking: key safety points

• Only overtake if you can see far enough ahead to be sure it's safe.
• Avoid causing other vehicles (overtaken, following or oncoming) to alter position or speed.
• Before you overtake, assess whether your machine is capable of the overtaking manoeuvre you're planning.
• Before starting to overtake, always ensure you can move back to the nearside in plenty of time.
• Always be ready to re-assess if a new hazard comes into view.
• Only overtake in situations where you won't come into conflict with other road users and it can be performed legally.
• When possible, avoid overtaking three abreast to leave yourself a margin of safety.
• Be aware of the potential dangers when filtering.
• On multi-lane carriageways, only overtake on the nearside if there are slow-moving queues of traffic and offside queues are moving more slowly.
• Never use the hard shoulder for overtaking.
• Consider signalling if it will benefit any other road user. Make sure that your signal is clear and can't be misinterpreted.
• Always be patient and leave a margin of safety to allow for errors.

The Whiskey Barrel / MRA and Whisky
« on: March 31, 2024, 07:59:32 pm »
I hate the stuff, but for those that do (and use MRA), you could try joining the dots:

https://www.myrouteapp.com/route/open/8860901

(from here: https://forum.myrouteapp.com/topic/6473/whisky-distilleries-scotland)

I'm sure there must be a whisky equivalent to the Munros - you know, ride between the 114(or whatever) distiliieries without getting a ticket within the 90 days of winter.

Hello John,

I did say I'd take them, but I've come over all sensible, and I know I won't get around to doing anything useful with them, so my apologies.  :(
But hopefully someone will take them off you and do something useful with them.

For Sale / Wanted / Re: BMW Alarm Remote x 2
« on: March 30, 2024, 09:09:48 pm »
Ditto. I alarmed mine once - 2 mins / 10 metres after buying it.  ::)
Had to ask the nice dealer man to disable it for me. It was so annoying I can't quite bring myself to read the manual.
And no-one takes a blind bit of notice of an alarm.

The best deterrent is to park your mud-flecked pride and joy next to a sparkling Fireblade/M1000RR/GS1300.

However, enough whinging - £10 is a very fair price, Philip!

That looks a damned sight cleaner than mine. Good job.
Nice to see you've retained the, er, toolkit.

And a sofa/chaise.

Deckchairs and a parasol on the roof.

And a BBQ.
