oh no corrosion
« on: April 04, 2015, 08:14:42 pm »
While cleaning my bike I found the paint flaking of the
Lower fork legs around the front wheel. Spindle  !
The bike is 22 months old just coming up to 12k on the clock.
So what's the procedure the a claim is it just take it back to the dealers
and point  out the issue and ask them to sort ?
Thanks
Brian

I would chip off the remainder, wash it in milk and paint it with Hammerite of the appropriate colour.

It'll be interesting to see how BMW reacts, I wouldnt be surprised if they try to wiggle out of it after 22 months.
Isnt it Ironic, no its a BMW what dya expect.

paint warranty is 24 months at list here. So, take it to the dealer asap.
What are they throwing in the streets up there ? We know about salt, silica, sand, even corrosion additives?

Had the same on my 2012 lower forks and shaft hub ,forgot to mention at the time the rear shock was also flaking very badly
Pointed out to my dealer and they cleared it with Bmw .
No hassle approved and fitted within the month of raising the issue
Shock was knocked back ,I'm sure if I had raised it at the same time it would have been included

You shouldn't have to mention it to anyone! God! This annoys me.

Mine isn't covered on any kind of warranty and at 10 years old (happy birthday etc etc) one 'might' expect a little on a UK bike. When it went in for its service and MoT a week or so ago it was mentioned that the rear hub is bubbling up nicely.

My front fork (wheel carrier or whatever) is flaking badly although the bike is 7 years old and has done 36 000 miles. The rear hub is also blistering up in several places. I've been trying to find a sensible priced replacements so that I could get them powder coated and then just swap them over once done but with people wanting an arm an a leg for 2nd hand ones I've resigned myself to having the bike off the road and stripping out the originals and getting them done.
I spoke to our mechanic in our motorcycle workshops and he said the powder coating on BMW's was of very poor quality and the Yamaha's they run have far better quality finish on their powder coating than BMW.  :(

Talked to the dealer service manager have to take it in to be photographs
Taken then it gets sent to HQ for approval but it generally gets
Knocked back and you then have to throw a fit with customer service at HQ
to move things on  >:(

Hi, I had very bad rust/Flaking on front wheel carrier, rear shaft drive and clutch cover. I managed to remove all the rust and re spray all the parts while on the bike with Plasticote... It took a while to mask up and do properly but even BMW were impressed.. The parts on my k1200s were all black, after a couple of goes I did the wheel carrier and clutch cover Matt black and shaft drive Gloss (which does tone down). I'm extremely happy with the results..
Hope this helps. It can be sorted

Anybody gone down the powder coating route, particulary for the Swinging arm around the drive hub area.  ? My GT 1300 is a minter but I am having the stands powder coated as they are a smigeon flaky. I have had the radiator cleaned out, crap in bottom ish five inches, no corrosion at all but if left in and salt stuck in there oh my goodness it would be a mess as others have described on here. I took out the original BM rad protector and replaced by a Wunderlech upgrade. I can see it stopping more crap getting in but fail to see the concern this design will cause overheating. I would be doubtful if the airflow is any different between the stock and the upgrade but would not be surprised if the airflows better through the upgrade, the design and construction seems to lend itself more to free flow of air but a better crap catcher. More like a high class culinder.
