Matt's Bikes / Bike Three: K1300S
« on: April 15, 2016, 04:00:16 pm »
So after 3 years of F800ST and maybe I got promoted or something and decided to make the move (April 2013 ish).  I almost green lit the flip out of a lava orange bike at BMW Alton.  Then they decided I had piston slap.  And to go and speak to my usual dealer as my bike is now worthless.  Thanks Alton.

BMW North Oxford were great at avoiding answering this: "so for 3 years I ask each time, 'any piston slap signs' and you say no it's one of the lucky ones, how does this all make sense?".  They were absolutely useless anyway, said they'd raise a BMW UK thing for me and then never said a word.  I obviously chased them for a bit then decided I didn't want to give them money.

So anyway Honda seemed to think it sounded fine.  Although I did get a pants price, I also got a 2009 tricolour K1300S with about 14,000 miles on it.  No electronic suspension here, or extra computer bits.  But it had TCS, ABS, grips etc so hurrah.

I loved this bike.

I did quite a bit of Europe on it too.

Oh and I also finally became a person who changes their exhaust.  About a year before selling I finally got an SC Project italian exhaust thingy for it:

I kept this bike up to about 47,000 and in November 2015 I think, finally it left me.  For the entirety of this ownership (so 2.5 years ish) I'd migrated to using Maidenhead BMW (Thames Valley).  I've yet to be disappointed, and they've even come to pick me up from the office once when I forgot how taxis work.  Also dropped me off a bit when they've had to keep the thing in overnight.

Matt's Bikes / My second bike F800ST

After selling the SV I lived in London for another 6-9 months and then buggered off to the Reading area.  I made it another few months and I dunno, somewhere around then I got this late 2007 F800ST with 5,000 miles on it.

The main thing that took me to this model/bike was ABS, given my locking up and not getting back on the horse properly.  Also heated grips and comfort.  And that belt drive sounded a bit of alright.  And it was!

Looking hilariously tiny next to one of his relatives!

I got this up to about 36,000 after 3 years of ownership.  It was pretty great until about a year in North Oxford gave me a bloody K1300S courtesy bike.  Then my fate was sealed.

Upon beginning my search for its replacement I also looked at the VFR1200 thing.  During a visit to a Honda garage some blind elderly lady reversed into it and knocked it over.  "I think I've just knocked over your bike", "is it on its side?" "yes" "then you knocked it over".
And as always I was all nice and said let's sort it outside of insurance.  BMW wanted £800 to make right.  I managed it for about £150, ignoring a scuff here and there where BMW would have replaced the panel.

The nice old lady then decides she's a broke ass lady and eventually coughs up only £100.

So in 2008 I learned to ride solely to avoid sitting on the back of my mate's bike.  And I bought this new (stupidly).

I had it about 4 weeks before riding it to Holland.  This was a little trip with the owners club 5 or so days after I passed the test.  Scary time trying to keep up with people!

Random fancy shot.

I did 4,000 miles on it in about 9 months, then had a low speed off due to managing to lock the front at 20mph.  I sold it shortly after it was repaired partly because of that and partly because London ain't no fun for riding a bike for fun.

2008 was an expensive year.

K1200 / K1300 Forum / PDM60 and BikeVis Cree v3 Install - wip
« on: January 23, 2016, 12:35:11 pm »
After much umming and arring (like a pirate) and procrastinating (like this sentence), I spent lots and ended up with a PDM60 power distribution thingy, the Cree lights with 30 degree spread, a GPS plug bit of cable and a bunch of cables.  Oh, and a wire stripper to make me feel more like a man.

Then I internetted and found http://www.i-bmw.com/showthread.php?t=48862 which told me it's going to be a pain in the bottom doing it outside.

As such I'm going to try and use this thread to add the detail needed to solder everything up indoors and get everything the right length so it is a simple install when I go outside.  Where it is cold.

Of course I need to actually do it first.  But in summary/so I remember, the rough layout will be:

PDM60: mounted in right-hand subframe under the rear cowling bit by grab handle
Cree v3: mounted under headlights using existing holes
Circuit 1: the front lights
Circuit 2: maybe GPS
Circuit 3: front USB/cig connection
Circuit 4: cig connection under seat for tyre inflator
Circuit 5,6: spare to rear

I'll update this thread with images and lengths, gauges of wire etc. as I progress.

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Battlax BT-016
« on: January 11, 2016, 10:09:36 pm »
So I recently swapped my 09 for a 15 K1300S Motorsport.  That took me from dead PR4s to great condition BT-016s.

Has anyone else had the pleasure of these?

Initially I had little to comment on them, however with the constant damp and wet, and 1,500 extra miles (so 3,500 total) I've come to think they're a bit poo.  Friday night I had the biggest rear end slide ever, replete with wagging front end and strained bottom muscles.  I'm guessing there was something on the road and it's just bad timing.

But even now I'm finding a distinct wobble at the rear on turn-ins at speed.  My first thoughts are they're getting squared off already, but it's much more pronounced than with the PR4s.

So yeah, I'm losing confidence in these and thinking I'll do a crafty switch to the PR4s before we freeze.

Thoughts?

Last time I bought a visor I used www.racevisors.co.uk

Does anybody have any other/hilariously cheaper recommendations?

The factory clear on my Shoei GT Air seems to want me to die when it rains at night time, though I've only had it circa 6 months.  Part of me is wondering whether my new winter gloves are scratchy scratchy, as my last visor on my old Shoei lasted as long as... well, for a few years.

So I'd had my '09 K1300S for a couple of years and got to 48,000 miles.  Then I got a '15 K1300S Motorsport.

Hopefully the below link shows it before it got wheeled out into the rain.

It's only on just over 2,000 miles now and is awesome.  My old one didn't have... anything bar traction, ABS and heated grips.  So now I'm enjoying playing with the suspension, and shift assist, and the various computer gubbins!

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Additional Lighting Question
« on: October 31, 2015, 10:36:16 pm »
For the first time in many years someone pulled across my path today, turning right after heading towards me.  It was quite close and reminded me how people have difficulty judging speed when you've just a single headlight at night.

I wanted chips. I got the chips.

So it put me to wondering what the options are for decently priced, decent looking (non MOT failing) additional lighting.

The objective obviously is to give some width between lights.

Is anybody running extras on the k1s3/k12s?

K1200 / K1300 Forum / K1300S raspy exhaust note from cold
« on: September 15, 2015, 10:45:37 am »
Morning all.  Please excuse my long absence.  I've been... absent.

I've noticed over the last week or so that when I start the bike from cold (morning and evening commutes) if I rev the throttle a bit it sounds... hollow and raspy from the exhaust.  After a minute or so it returns to its usual much deeper rumble/growl from the same throttle blipping.

Does this sound familiar?  I'm running an SC-Project exhaust with the baffle out.  That's been on for a good six months though.  It does seem to pop and bang a bit more recently, though.

My first thought is maybe it's the exhaust flap sticking open, though I was hoping for an amber warning light.

This is tempting me to pick up the old GS-911, though if there's no code I'll be a sad badger.  I guess I should call BMW!

I bought the lovely bulky Zumo 550 from a friend who had it on his K1200S and was selling up (he's a GS now!).  I've worked out how to change maps etc and had a lovely time realising I forgot Monaco a couple of months ago.

Audio I've been unable to get to work.  I'm certain I installed the voices from that BaseCamp thing or whatnot (it's on laptop, i'm not) however it seems intent on stfu.  Does anybody have a link or a magic wizard who can advise?

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Rear shock (non ESA) Servicing/Replacement
« on: March 24, 2015, 05:34:02 pm »
Today whilst the K1300S was in for getting the gear indicator potentiometer diagnosed I was given some other great news:

"Your rear shock has some slight misting... it's not covered under the extended warranty as the bike is over 30k miles... about £750 to replace... haha why not buy the ex-demo bike for £11.5k."

Now I'm somewhat less than eager to pay £750 quid to replace the thing and am hoping some of us have been in the same boat and have some advice regarding how/where this number can be lowered.

Any suggestions?

Cheerio,

Matt

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Gear Indicator Fault
« on: March 17, 2015, 10:27:28 am »
Thought I'd post this up so we can see how it ends.

On Sunday on my K13S I noticed in 6th gear when rolling off the throttle slightly the number 6 would flicker/vanish for a while from the gear indicator display.  The other gears would be fine.

Yesterday it worked fine again.  Today 6th isn't showing at all.
http://www.i-bmw.com/showthread.php?t=2747&highlight=gear+indication would indicate it's warranty-covered (I'm on BMW Insured thing).

I'm about to call BMW and see about when I can take it in. :).

(Is this the start of a bunch of issues that makes me part-ex it for a newer one instead of buying that Z4?!)

K1200 / K1300 Forum / How many miles has your K done?
« on: March 03, 2015, 09:09:13 pm »
As I was picking my bike up from Maidenhead BMW the other week I enquired as to the highest mileage K the guy could think of that they service.

He didn't think much over 40k.

My K1300S is at just over 36k now, and so I'll be at 42k in less than 6 months.  I'm hoping I can last another three years before changing, meaning I'll be at... damn, 72k!

What's everybody on?
