I'm new here
« on: September 08, 2022, 02:06:01 pm »
Hello everyone,

Just got a K1300S HP and thought I should join the fun here. I had a K1200S some years ago - can't remember why I sold it, but the 13 seems smoother in every way (except when it's too hot - I'm already planning to clean the radiator).

All the best,

Eidur

Cleaning the radiator will help but start saving for a new one

Hello ad welcome. As Rae says, you may be able to clean a little more life into the current radiator but there is ultimately only one way these things go. :(
Correct rear brake use is scientifically proven to shorten stopping distances in EVERY road situation.

Hi Eidur and welcome to the madhouse that is EuroKClub!

If you put a couple of quid away each day, in about two years you will have enough for a new radiator and it won't seem so bad...Brian

I thought as much. When the inevitable happens, where's the best place to buy a new radiator?

Sadly, the only real, viable option is to buy from BMW.  :(

Yup, BMW central at a cost of about £600.

You could try the reputable breakers,

James Sherlock in the West Country or

Motorworks in the frozen north.

There is a theory that radiators off crashed bikes do not survive well and those off old bikes might well be worse than the one you are trying to replace.

I'm sure there are custom builders who do weird things for weird custom bikes and cars who 'could' do it at a price, but no one has come up with a supplier thus far. Let's face it, someone makes the originals...

Welcome Eidur!

I've run two K1300S's to just short of 40k miles each with no radiator problems (I clean them annually).
How many miles has your HP done? The radiator may still be OK - don't panic yet!

Like Brian has said, used ones are a bit of a risk, but I had a saved search on Ebay for months, and eventually struck lucky.  The add said that the radiator had been bought new, and used for just a couple of weeks.  I did approach with deep skepticism, but photos, more contact with the seller meant it made sense, and I took the plunge.  £325 for a 2 week old rad was too good to miss, and having received the rad, I absolutely believe that it had been used for a very short time.  It has transformed the way the bike behaves in traffic.

If you start looking now, maybe you can also get lucky.

The bike's done 32k @richtea. I just finished cleaning it (rinsing it out from the back and all that) as best I could and it didn't make any difference. The rad is really gunked up and doesn't look like this has ever been done.

A couple of questions, if I may:
1. Any recommendations for a garage to do the work in central/south London?
2. If I buy the rad, how painful is the process of changing it yourself?

Easy enough to change as long as you are able to vacuum fill it. It will dump all the coolant and overheat if it's not vacuum filled correctly.
