18,000 mile service
« on: October 03, 2018, 07:27:42 pm »
Good evening everyone.

My 2008 k1200s have just turned 18,000 miles and is now due one of the big service checks.

Just wondering if I need to do it ASAP or could it wait until it’s annual service in March, and by then it could be approaching 19,000.

Any advice gladly taken on board and appropriated...

Many thanks

If you're taking it to a BMW dealership I think they'll allow a 1,000 overshoot before they consider it out of warranty.
But I'd confirm that with your dealer.

If you're taking it elsewhere, or doing it yourself, do what you like - hanging on another 1,000 isn't going to change much.

I'm guessing a 2008 model is out of warranty already:-) and given the low mileage I can't see BMW splitting hairs over the interval.  Will be interesting to hear what they say.  Typically I understood BMW to give quite a lot of leeway if you have it regularly serviced.  Peter

Some of the dealers offer deals during the quite months. Might be worth hanging about for the "specials".
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

I bought used approved three years ago and have extended war. I’ll give them a call later this morning. Thanks for the replies 👍

At that age and mileage is the servicing schedule not based on time rather than miles?
Correct rear brake use is scientifically proven to shorten stopping distances in EVERY road situation.

I actually think it is based more on what the stealer thinks he can extract from your wallet David.

And I think you were very brave flying, I assume, down to Portugal in your condition  ;D

A quick check of the manual

http://motobavaria.com/docs/k1300s.pdf

does indeed support the fact that services are annual unless the bike is doing more than 10,000km (6000 miles in real money) per year so the question is, when was the last service and what was the mileage? The next service should happen either, not more than 12 months after the previous service or, not more that 6000 after the previous service, whichever is the sooner.

Off topic:

Brian - I'm flying on Saturday morning so don't know for sure yet that it will be OK. What I have discovered is that breaking the ribs at the rear (as I have done this time) is sooooo much easier than breaking the ribs at the front/side, which is what I did last time. Although the break score was 5 this time, and only 2 last time I did some rib damage, sleeping, moving, breathing etc. has been easier from the start and is improving noticeably quicker than last time. (Although sneezing still feels like I've just been impaled in a very long, sharp stick!!) If you ever get the choice as to where the rib break(s) will be - choose the back :D

Bike booked in for the 19th October.

It’s due a valve check but I’m also having the full service down at the same time. Service was due next may, but due to the mileage on a euro tour I did over the summer this year, it’s put me just over the 18,000 mark.

They will allow me to push 19,000 without effecting the warranty, so all good 👍
