I made a thing
« on: December 02, 2021, 11:58:17 am »
I finally made something useful with my printer!
It's a helmet hook for the garage/helmet. I have had my numerous hats sat in a (IKEA) Kallax thing for a while but a risky change is as good as a not doing anything, as they say, so I did a thing. It survived the night with my old heavy Arai so it now gets the pleasure of my newer heavy Shoei, whilst I print a 2nd and likely 3rd and 4th off for the remainder. The Kallax now becomes a bench! Single garage-life is awfully exciting :P.

I also printed a sat nav mount which i'm slightly more scared to trust!

Both look very good, Matt! Since they're relatively inexpensive to manufacture, I'd recommend testing a copy of each to destruction.

You could measure the stress/force with luggage scale-type arrangement:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/193624330287
or a Millenial one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Etekcity-Suitcases-Auto-Off-Function-Temperature/dp/B00QV1F27I/ref=sr_1_8

And tell us the result.

Re: satnav, you might need a vibration test too. Not so easy, other than mount something simialr in there and ride for a few weeks.

Tom, that is a hilariously great solution! I'm a KTM boy now though, and the GT hasn't got the nice GS bar, so requires another approach. In trying to avoid the bar mounted way.

Rich: that's a good point! The main expense is electricity and time. And I've yet to attach it to a smart plug to get the electricity result. The hook took maybe 6 hours but I'm printing the 2nd one faster. The GPS mount took over 13.

The hook I printed on its side so as to increase strength in the direction required. I.e it can't fail by delamination. I'll have a think about a test setup that uses stuff I already have :).

Vibration for the GPS is my main concern as the V twin does do that!

Now that's an interesting one! The two above I - suppose I should have been explicit in the OP - downloaded existing open-source designs and printed. The CAD part takes so long I rarely do it these days.

The only K1300 thing I've found on the main site I used for parts (Thingiverse) is this RAM mount, which seems like a bad idea to me!

Now i'm without a donor bike to test-fit to, I think trying to make a fender extender would be pretty difficult without someone else having already done that hard work/fitting.

For those as bored as me today, or as curious as my cat, here's what the inside looks like mid-print. It's 30% infill density. If I were printing something non-structural, I'd use 5%.

Yep, looked pretty nice! And that anti-dive stuff on the forks looks amusing.

That bike was virtually from outer space in the 80s. Or Top Gun.
You could almost trace David's H2 SE pointy fairing back to the GPZ one!
I also appreciate the tidy lines for a Japanese bike too - less gubbins sticking out of the fairing than modern bikes.

Best 3-D printed thing I've seen and paid good money for is a bumper for my new hideous Garmin Zumo XT; excellent fit and came a free cover for the mount when the sat nag isn't fitted.

Quite why anyone would make a bike-specific sat nag and NOT put a rubbery edge thingy to it is beyond me. Hands up all those who have never dropped their sat nag. Oh, well, I haven't, but still...

Have you tried Open SCAD? I find it easier than normal CAD because you write a sort of script, which makes it far easier to tweak. https://openscad.org/

Aah you know I would often see reference to SCAD with 'resizable' boxes and so forth in the above library site but never got round to looking into it. Seeing as I can manage with c# recently I should probably take a look at this, thanks :).

What kind of uses have you put it to?

I've used it to make various little bits and pieces with the 3D printer. I always find I select the wrong face or object with normal CAD programs, and it's difficult to resize things.  This is easier to change, particularly if you use variables rather than hard coding values. This is a replacement window catch I made for  Mother in Law's UPVC window...

There's also a VS Code plugin for OpenSCAD.
