Clutch master cylinder
« on: August 02, 2021, 10:34:40 pm »
I’ve noticed I have a bit of weeping around my clutch master cyclinder.
I understand from reading the posts a repair kit is not available for these.
Is that still the case or does anyone know differently now?

Mine was replaced a short while ago, though under extended warranty, so no idea of cost.

The dealer said that before mine, he'd only ever replaced one other on a K1300GT and that was just two weeks earlier!

Perhaps our bikes are now at an age where parts like this are starting to fail?

i'm not a huge fan of brake/clutch cylinder repair kits, i find on quite a few occasions the bore is scored and the kit doesn't work.
cost would probably change my mind, cylinders are usually a cheap item but this is bmw here.
if you have to use the repair kit i would hone out the bore with some sandpaper to smooth it out.
another piece of average news for you is when one cylinder goes, it's possible the other will go shortly. they've both done the same work, same fluid... and now you've introduced a new, back to full pressure cylinder... it's going to test your old slave cylinder.
again , i don't know the prices bmw look for these cylinders but if it was any way reasonable i'd stick both on.
also give your lever and cylinder a good clean, pump clutch up and make sure there is a problem there first.
if everything works and lever feels right...sometimes you see problems that don't exist...guess how i know...

Oberon do one for the K-bikes.  It's the go-to solution for KTM's suspect it's a cheaper and better option than OEM BMW.

Which ever solution you go with, without a GS-911 to activate the ABS pump..best of luck when trying to bleed the system.

i couldn't see a master cylinder by oberon, maybe they're there i just didnt see them...as a matter of fact i had a wee look on't net and could only find secondhand ones. i would be loath to put on a second hand master cylinder on pretty much anything.
i don't think you'll need any diagnostics to bleed your clutch...
chris are you on commission from the gs911 outfit?

Don't forget the clutch cylinder uses mineral oil and not DOT 4.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Suspected it would be made by Magura who do them for KTM and did some digging. Came across a reference to lawsuit between BMW and Magura on Beemerboneyard so suspect BMW put a stop to Magura selling spares. I think it's a 13mm bore and wouldn't be surprised if seals from KTM rebuild kits will work. Don't attempt to clean up the bores though, they will be hard anodised, any abrasive will just make it scrap. Very unlikely that the bore will get damaged in these, mineral oil will have good lubricity, more likely that the seals will have aged.

good point on the mineral oil doing less damage, as to the hard anodised bores... i simply did not know that, that would change my view on a repair kit. all of the cylinders i change are pretty much hardened paper, you can see the scores at a glance.
is this a thing on motorcycles?
i guess thats why car, tractor et all cylinders are so cheap(usually)...good stuff, every day's a schoolday.
