Looks great-reality is it has a very rough finish by design-end result is that I took it off after a tiny ride out because it wears and mullers a boot in no time at all. Ah well.

Surely a bit of rubber pipe slipped over it would have kept the i crease in size but taken the roughness off the boot!

Yep : agree - but this thing is meant to be seen. Also adding rubber would have made it even bigger - and that would have interfered too much with my plates of meat.
And when I say rough : the lever could zest a lemon and grate nutmeg. It really is rough!

A bit of heavy sanding with some emery cloth?

I think a grinder would be needed Brian. If they'd manufactured it with a rounder/smoother pattern it would have been ok : but honestly- it really could double as a grater or tool to rough up any surface-shame- it does look good...
