Is this oil fine for the task at hand?

Yes, pop it in and enjoy. (Still talking about the oil here)
No, I wouldn’t fry chips in that muck

I think you should buy one of these kits and let us know how it goes. After all Nippy Norman is the got to BMW site, isn't it?

So if we take £11 a litre and the kit is 4 litres then by my maths that means of the total cost of ~£133 just £687 £44 of it is the oil if it was the BMW stuff.

All I'm saying is that how much money are we possibly saving by not using BMW oil. It's not exactly going to be saving you £44 quid. And even if it did, that's bugger all, unless the intent is to prove it's fine. Much like I proved to my mother that you can have pasta instead of rice with a curry.

So to me the debate is pointless. If the amounts considered here are meaningful then the 'perceived' quality BMW should have been avoided. Is there any other justification?

The £11/litre was the mass buy discount price. Your local stealer will want the thick end of £18 from memory...

Go to your room!

And sorry Trucky if I sounded ranty, I'm just projecting from my massive pain in the arse Friday day full of nonsensical meaningless workshops. :). God help me if I know what Annex 3 section 13 exists for.

Yes and very helpful he was too if somewhat off-hand...I don't think he likes 'people'  ::)

But that was about 3 weeks after he first opened and there was a phone number.

After that, no way.

Well I wasn’t aware of the other two until now, so thanks for that chaps.
I did notice motoworks sell Silkoline pro4 and spec if for the K1300 though.

I’m going to pop it in, see how it goes and if not happy, replace with the Bmw stuff.

Yeah I like Motorworks, done me well over the years.

Also, do make a song and dance if everything goes ok, otherwise we'll forget you know it! :D we need some new ideas :)

Ha ha, I shall do (I probably won’t!)
I do bow to you guys and your knowledge in this area.
But I’m also willing to try these things too.
If it’s suggested by both motoworks and Nippy, I’m happy to try it.
I’ve read numerous good reviews about the stuff, have used their products in other bikes.
Fingers crossed 🤞🏼

:D

For many years my bike was my only transport, so I was very risk averse.

Pal up with 2 or 3 others and order enough for a couple of oil changes and get it from here https://www.ato24.de/en/bmw-advantec-pro-15w-50-motorcycle-engine-oil-1-l.html I did and saved a lot and it was an excellent service. better than £17 per litre from you local BMW stealer.
Its not always the destination that counts its the ride, having a destination just stops you going round in circles.

If you are going to create a Poll, please ensure that the questions you ask are concise, not mutually exclusive and will give the information you want.

The current poll asks members to choose between 'this oil is fine' and 'I wouldn't fry chips in it'.

Personally, I have never used it so can't tick the first box.

However, I wouldn't eat chips cooked in it because they would taste dreadful. And I never fry chips! I could tick this choice but it won't tell you anything meaningful about my choice of oil for my K.

So, I don't vote.

Perhaps a more meaningful choice would be to ask members whether they would you use non-BMW Advantec oil in their K...

O Yes
O No

Simples!

It always amazes me that folks buy a fairly expensive, relatively high tech, 170bhp, 170mph motorcycle and then want to save a few quid on things like coolant and engine oil.

If you can buy oil at £10 /litre less than Advantec, this will save you £0.58p per mile or a couple of tanks of fuel, on 6,000 mile oil changes.

You could buy cheap tyres and save more than that! Or run regular unleaded!

Oh, the perils of buying a second-hand K without a FBMWSH  :o

I made a similar point on the FJR Forum, you spend thousands on a bike many many hundreds if not thousands on jacket, trousers, boots, helmet and gloves and you want to save a few pence on oil and tyres, what a strange breed we are  :o
