Removing sport case lock without key?
« on: May 26, 2019, 03:31:05 pm »
Hi All,

Apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere but after a number of searches I have not found it.

I have a pre-loved set of sport cases to put on my K1200S. Only problem I have is that I do not have a key for them but obviously need to unlock them so that I can lock them on the bike.

I understand how to fit new lock/key and also how the recode the existing barrels to my existing key ...

I just need to get the barrels out.  :-*

Any sensible suggestions gratefully accepted.

Yeh, if only. Having a key would make life so much easier.

I have removed the handles/lock/etc units but without a key I can see no way to remove the lock barrels so that can replace/recode them.

I have actually been able to get one out but I had been poking and probing so much when it almost fell out of its own accord that I cannot replicate what I did on the other barrel.

I guess it’s a trip to Vines, Bahnstormers or North Oxford.

Cheers Rae

I am very surprised that in both Google and here I cannot find any definitive guide on how to do this. It must have been solved before now and must be possible.

How do BMW dealers do it?

🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

I must admit, I'm quite glad that information isn't available online.

I don't want the scallywags being able to google how to break into my luggage!

If there is really no other way then you may need to drill the lock out.

Understand what you’re saying howlingdawg but I already have the cases open and just want to remove the lock barrels.

The sport cases are not the same as system cases.

Rae, if I haven’t worried them out by Tuesday I’ll be on the phone to local dealers. 😀😀

Hang on No 2, I 'thought' you couldn't get them open... ::)

I'm sure TomL has a whole article on removing the lock with the case open. With it closed and locked it isn't possible short of a drill-out, but with it open I'm sure Tom did it. Tom?

If you already have them open then this video might help you visualise what you're trying to do.

I've rekeyed my own locks but had both keys which makes it easier. :)

It was on the old site Brian and if I remember, it was how to remove the barrel with the key inserted. The OP does not have a key.

If the case is open, you need to poke the end sprung latch with a thin long blade screwdriver and the lock should drop out. Trouble is that it needs the key to be in the lock.

I think that you will have to drill out the barrel. Start with a 3mm bit and drill as deep as the key will go. Keep trying with larger bits until the barrel drops out.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Thanks All.

I had found Tom’s post and the YouTube video. I had thought the first lock came out with a screwdriver poking the locking tine in (behind grey plastic tab) but now I’m not sure as the locking tone must be down towa ds the bottom of the barrel ‘hole’.

I had made a tool like the one in the video out of stiff copper wire but have not had any luck. I wonder if the locking tine could be 180 degrees out so I trying to drag the tine the wrong way.

I’ll try more patience and time.

Cheers All

I'm 'sure' the locking pins only go in one way, all on the same side of the barrel.
