K1300s rattling engine
« on: May 22, 2019, 08:47:15 pm »
So my K1300S dies after a quick motorway blast in France a week or so ago.

Got it back today and it started straight away and ticked over but there was a horrendous rattling coming from the engine, possibly right hand side.
Turned it off straight away and booked in to a local garage.
Don't know if a con rod has let go or a cam chain issue.

Anyone got any ideas?

My guess would be cam chain tensioner. Does it stop rattling after a few seconds? Local garage you say, location in your profile would help us.

Cam chain tensioner would be preferable to a rod.
As soon as I heard the rattle I turned it off so don't know if it would have stopped.

I'm near Brighton UK.

I would get it looked at by a BMW dealer rather than a local garage, unless the local garage happens to be a BMW dealer.

Local garage is a bit colloquial, he's BMW specialist who happens to be local.

I doubt if the camchain tensioner would have caused the engine to die.

Rattling on the right could be the tensioner or the chain, but it could also be the clutch.

If it had thrown a rod then I think there would be much oil and bared innards.

Be interesting to see if it is firing on all four.

Crankshaft position sensor?

I did a 4 or 5 mile blast at 170+. I slowed and came off the motorway, and heard a rattle as I went up the slip road.
I stopped within about 30 secs and the engine stopped. It would only turn over for about 1 second and then nothing.
Got it recovered and arrived today, it started first try, idled and got the rattle so turned it off.

Rods are pretty terminal ! I think you'd know if you had dropped one.

I'm sure you didn't notice that Costas is from Greece. Without even knowing you I would expect that Costas's command of the English language is significantly better than your command of the Greek language.

Costas has a very good understanding of the K1300 and has had to replace the engine on his so may just be the best placed person on here to offer advice from experience.

Help and advice is offered freely and in the spirit of trying to help. Sometime the advice given is not what you want to hear but it doesn't change the spirit in which it was given.
