WunderlinQ
« on: June 14, 2020, 06:53:32 pm »
Right, what’s this WunderlinQ about then? Can someone explain how it all works? I know it connects to the bikes bar wheel thing, via your phone. Is it instead of a Nav 5/6 ? I only have a 660.
Don’t want to get behind the times....

I can’t! I know no more! I’ve googled it but not much wiser.
It’s £250 ish, not sure if it’s just for BMWs or not. There’s some kind of box that clips onto your sat nav holder(??), you put your phone in this and you can control music etc. and can also bring up engine performance read outs and sat nav routes.
You download the app on your phone.... and you control everything from the wheel.

A dream no more!
Is this instead of a BMW sat nav then? If so, can you use Basecamp?

Yes it's a replacement for your NAV 4,5,6, Garmin sat nav's,  Basecamp will work and you can download the TOM/ GPX files to your phone NAV program, you could load Garmin Drive App onto your phone or any other NAV software and run the one you prefer.

Thanks Tom. I see they are sold out until August. I’m not sure how this would pan out on a K1600 though and I’d need more feedback from owners before taking the plunge.

I am pretty certain that won't work with a K1600 as it will need to sit in/behind the dashboard - your Garmin 660 should fit in there fine but won't be controlled by the thumb wheel.

Try a Nav V, you can get some good deals on them and they work pretty well.

It will work on the K1600, but full data stream is only on post 2016 bikes the performance and fault data requires the optional BMW component called the "Onboard computer Pro", seems to be fitted after 2015.

I have a 2015. I can see the problem with the 1600s dash and the gismo won’t fit. I wouldn’t need the data really, I have a GS-911WIFI as I do the servicing etc myself. If Basecamp and music, phone, etc worked well I might be interested.

Yes, on the GS/RT/XR the Sat Nav connector is in front of the dash and the WinderLync sits forward. On the K1600 it sits behind and won’t fit.

Is this not smaller than a 660,

Good question? I looked at this sometime ago but have never actually seen one?

The WunderLINQ itself is just the device that plugs into the BMW Sat Nav Cradle. On the GS/RT/XR etc this is on the outside of the bike so the depth of the setup isn't an issue. On the K1600 you have to push a button on the dash that raises the screen and then pops the top of the dashboard up and the cradle raises up for access. When you put the Nav into the cradle and push it back down it locks and seals up behind the dashboard cutout, so that exact depth is important, and the cutout is exactly the right size for the Nav (this has changed over the years for Nav 4/5/6). If the mount is too large you wont be able to shut the dashboard down, and if it is too small it will be sunken in, and then you would need a phone with the same size screen to view the details on it OK.

You would also have to insert/connect and remove/disconnect it whenever you wanted your phone which would be a pain: https://youtu.be/Th2Mp7VjtUQ

If you could find a phone mount exactly the right size and modify the aperture on the dashboard it might work  :o

** Edit ** Just found this - you could just feed the cable out to it I suppose and sit it outside the dashboard?

I spy a 3d printed piece in that last photo! Is it supposed to be a ram mount? If so, I hope they thought about their infill! And also that it will snap off anyway.

And cross head screws on a bmw, whatever next! :p
