New Tomtom 550
« on: March 02, 2018, 03:05:11 pm »
Tomtom are bringing out a new model Rider, it's the Rider 550, which apparently connects to WiFi and updates without the need for a computer. I'm hoping they include the addition of a sim card like they have in the Go 5200 so that it will be totally independent.

Details, as they are, are here

According to those in the know on the Tomtom forum we are going to have to do without SIM card functionality for the Rider 550.

I am a Garmin guy, by all means. Mainly due to BaseCamp (and before that, Mapsource). But still, I think the "strategic" direction TomTom is following is the only correct one : not have every connectivity function be handled by the device itself, but by the (smart)phone taking care of all connectivity. This way, when on the road, it's a piece of cake to make or modify a route on the manufacturer's website (mydrive.tomtom), and upload it to the device, with no computer needed. Very much impossible with Garmin GPS'es. Garmin is way behind in that context...

Real progress would be when they manage to squeeze GPS into a smartphone. Oh, hang on...

In my luddite view, GPS units have a single advantage over smartphones - battery life.
Since the machine being tracked has a (massive) power supply, there's no logic in buying a GPS unit.

I rest my case. Under my tin foil helmet. And scurry for cover...

I have the Tomtom App on my phone and with a 2.1 amp charger it keeps the phone charged even at full brightness. However, it's the size of the GPS chip that lets the phone down a bit, it's a bit slow to respond and so sometimes you can overshoot a turn while the GPS chip catches up.

What you're saying there sounds right. But somehow, there's something wrong. I just can't figure out what. But let me say it sounds like :

"Bicycles allow you to get anywhere. Why buy a motorcycle ?"   8)
