Just to elaborate in case I was a little vague with my description.
The pipes I am on about are part of the inlet manifold, the 2 longer pieces that clip into the actual air filter housing. Looking at them they must at least half the size at the intake end as the fitting end. This must restrict the flow. The other thing i noticed was the dirt on the old filter was centred around a single point on each, making me think the air flow wasn't even but being funnelled.

Again, anyone ever removed these long pieces just leaving the housing itself?

I have a feeling that the BMW wind tunnel guys might have thought of that during the development phase.

All bikes have smaller inlet orifices compared to filter size. The nozzles are positioning the inlet right in the undisturbed air at the bike's nose. Cutting them in half would destroy the airflow.

But, you know, get the hacksaw out and give it a go. We await your report  8)

I have a pair if you want to cut them down or play around. I was a fan of flat open filters, thought it sounded good and went well.

Yes, as long as you leave the retaining part on to hold the filter in place, you can just remove the tube (and cut the rest back flat if you have a spare).

One of my mates done that on his K1200R, along with a PC, and got very good results, roll-on etc. Whether it is as good at 120mph+ when you loose the ram effect is another matter, but he was certainly happy, and I done it on my K1300GT - both of those are single inlets, so it may have been more noticeable. Most of these tubes are shaped to keep noise down and get through noise and emission laws, and you will here a lot more intake noise  ::)

I had an Evoluzione induction kit on my K12s which basically replaces the snorkels with a new retaining kit.
The K doesn't have a proper ram air system so you won't loose any RAM effect at the top end.
The Dyno showed some improvements but I can't find the before and after graphs.

The most noticeable difference was noise - it's very loud without the snorkels.
With the TBR C5 it sounded like a F-4 Phantom on trackdays but on long motorway runs it was tiresome.

This is the kit I have, although obviously there's no need for surgery on the S as it already has two inlets.

...hopefully without the long black oil-smoke trail following in its wake...

That sounds awesome to me, not changing anything that can't be put back.
... missed out on a set of those filters on ebay a while ago for £26  >:(

Thanks for the Input Howlingdawg

Here's the Evoluzione de-snorkling kit on the K1300S.
Filters are stock.

I might change them for AC Schnitzers at the next service interval.
