Are those of you with the Optimate using the canbus version (Optimate 4?) but set to standard? Does the canbus/DIN work OK? I need to get a new charger and would like to have the options....
Or the (expensive) BMW one?

Cheers
Mark

Having just got my new k can I confirm from this conversation that charging the battery using normal optimate cables fixed to the battery is ok and when the leads on the battery are removed to fit said optimate leads do I loose any info on the dash.

You'll probably lose the trip data and average consumption stuff but I have fitted and un-fitted the cables many times and have mostly never lost anything because I press down on the battery cables as I remove the bolt, slip the bolt through the new jumper cable and refit it without losing contact on the battery cables. Fiddly but possible if you plan and prepare properly!

If you do manage to disconnect totally then you may need to reset the throttle position sensor afterwards. Ignition on but engine OFF, turn throttle twistgrip slowly to fully open position, hold there for a couple of seconds, close throttle, repeat twice, ignition off, job done.

Brian (who says it's only 12volts but it can still bite so use a firm hand, or at least finger  8) )

I've had my battery disconnected for several minutes without losing any data so I think you'll be ok.

I see the consensus is to direct connect:-) however has anyone brought one of those expensive :-) BMW chargers and used it via the Canbus socket with success?  Peter

I have one secondhand BMW charger, but use it direct onto the battery terminals, through habit. (My last bike didn't seem to want to charge via the canbus, and I forgot to try it direct on the newer bike.) It works well and it's all of 1 minute to remove the cover.

I'm happy to try via canbus if you need to know.

Same here, works just fine provided you set the Optimate 4 to canbus mode.

No cambus setting on mine. Just tried it out.
First on a spare battery using the crocodile clips
then on my VFR battery on the bike, again using the clips
then my K13s using the socket on the bike.
All worked without changing anything as the charger recognises the different systems.

Its not always the destination that counts its the ride, having a destination just stops you going round in circles.

Mine says you have to connect both pos and neg terminals together (on the charger, NOT the battery  8) ) then turn it on to switch between canbus and direct mode.
