Sat Nav - USB??
« on: November 19, 2021, 02:18:30 pm »
Hi there. Looking at buying a Tom Tom 550 and although this would run for several hours on its own battery, was thinking about on board charging. Presume this would be USB, but possibly not I guess. Has anyone some experience of this and how best to draw "hardwired" power- is it correct there's some kind of power supply in the battery compartment of my K1300S and R.
Cheers any advice,
Andrew.

Many threads on this one over the years. This one is probably useful. We've mostly all done something similar. Bike mount and the Nippy Norman's cable and all sorted.

The plug is normally cable tied near the battery unless someone has been in there before you and released it.

My Tomtom mount is simply hard wired via the supplied fuse direct to the battery. It's been fine on two Ks over 8 years.

Cheers for this, very useful. I note also that the 550 apparently runs for @ 6 hours which would be enough in most instances - obv needs charging each time, but unless on a tour I'm not often "lost" for more than 6 hours🙂🙂

Oh even I could do that! (Probably). Literally straight to the battery. And whilst on the subject- ram ball mount screwed into the hole where the BMW badge sita on the top yoke?
Cheers,
Andrew

You need one of these. Really easy to install on the plug previously discussed.

I find the RAM mount in the steering head is too low and too far from my left hand. I have always used a Hornig mount in the inner end of the left hand handlebar, much more 'logical' siting for me.

Thanks for responses all, much appreciated. Does the Hornig work on the R though - thought I'd read there's not quite enough space for this (but fine on the S)?

Ah! Dunno. What's an R anyway...

Folks with Ss have fitted the R top yoke to lift the bars so if the bars on the R are higher, then there should be more room. The Hornig site will tell you if their kit will fit an R I would have thought.
