I've added Sport Cases, SW-Motech Alu Rack, rear splash guard, Ilmberger hugger, Akrapovic can, R&G bungs and full case and fork protection set, black K1200S top yoke and Helibars (as I couldn't stand the split stock yoke in silver on the black bike), HID lights, centre stand, alarm and the Sargent seat off the K12 with the pod sprayed to match the black.

Hi

Please can you elaborate what the rear splash guard is? I am thinking it might be the small bolt on BMW supplied accessory mudguard, jut to make sure I am not missing out on something.

Thanks

Sounds like it. This is the splash guard (as in the term to search for, if you don;t know it):
46627675424 BMW

Rare in the UK, but there are a few in Europe.

It is indeed the screw on BMW thingy. Used to be called a rear mudguard. Every K1200S came with one in the box and it was a customer fit/no fit choice that no dealer ever gave to a customer refore they almost never fitted them. North Oxford had a box full on the shelf and the parts guy had no idea what they were for until I tried to get new screws for mine. Mine was fitted because it was an ex BMW staff/press bike.

It does a way better job of keeping the rear of the bike more or less spotless than any hugger ever will.

I doesn't look like it would be very effective at all.
Perhaps it changes the way the air circulates round the rear of the bike so it doesn't suck up all the muck. Bit like Ducati's wings on their Moto GP bike causes down force....or perhaps not.  :-\

I agree the hugger makes sod all difference to keeping clean. I removed mine as it caught the tyre on a couple of occasions. Fitted the rear 'mudguard' but if the back end stays a bit cleaner it's hard to tell. The Acro still gets plastered with muddy water, but maybe the sports cases are helped.

The hugger has three uses:
1. looking pretty. It does this really well.
2. protecting the rear shock. It also does this really well.
3. stopping mud & gunge plastering the (external) rear of the bike. It doesn't do this very well.

The tiny extender has one use - see no. 3 above. It does stop some of the external grubbiness.
The extender makes a difference more than proportional to it's cost, but you'll still get mud on the rear & the exhaust - just not as much.

The little extender is worth fitting if you can find one at a reasonable price - used to be £25, but now £40 or so.
The hugger is worth fitting one if you like carbon or have nightmares about rotting shocks.

Effective?

A mate and I parked up side by side in really shitty weather in Faringdon a few years ago when I had my K12S and he had a K13s. We had stopped for petrol and pushed the bikes off the forecourt (those were the days) and went in to pay. When we came out he just stopped dead in his tracks and stared at the two bikes. 'Have you just cleaned yours?'

Stupid question, but seeing as I had been following and the front of mine was just a mudbath, the back was still recognisable as a bike, the number plate quite legible and the back of his was as bad as the front of mine.

He ordered one as soon as he got home.

There are a couple of really cheap ones on ebay ...........ONLY £71.36 postage and packing from the US of A.  ;D

US: $47 (= £34) & includes P&P:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/384231046932

France: 17 Euros (= £15) but no P&P:
http://www.apleingaz.fr/bmw/9384-B3830-46627675424-PROTECTEUR.html

Denmark: 100kr (=£11) but no P&P:
https://www.123mc.dk/brugt/mc/reservedele/bmw-k1200sk1300s-46627675424/-50702

On all those you may well get hit for import duty. Judging from other people's experience, it's a bit random - so either nothing or £30%-ish of the total inc P&P.

Thanks Rae. You have a truly global search engine going on there. Which just goes to show how rare some of these parts have become. Indeed some parts and accessories are now unobtainable. If you want them its a waiting game on the second hand market if they ever appear.   ???
