Title: My day
Post by: Elite Evil on February 20, 2015, 02:49:24 pm
Picked up the K12S for its first run after its winter layoff.

New rear tyre to replace punctured tyre near its limit and managed 22 miles from the garage before filling a petrol station forecourt with steam and chucking coolant everywhere. Done more miles in the back of a transit than on the road so far in 2015.   :(

Ugh.

Arrrrrrgggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

I came out of the pay kiosk at my local Shell station late one cold winter night two years ago to find a yoof of foreign origin delving under my bike.

Just before I gave him a TCX dental check-up, he lifted a finger to his lips, then looked up at me and said 'It's coolant!'

He had spotted it dribbling from the belly pan while he was filling his Corsa with cocaine. Nice guy though.

I managed to limp the 15 miles home without blowing it up and then spent 2 months trying to find a replacement radiator before giving up and buying new from BMW. Ouch!

Brian (who knows just how these things feel, unfortunately)

Surely that one belongs elsewhere.
No rads on ebay, but if you need and want I can ask locally might worth the try.

I've yet to see a radiator on ebay for a K1200S. If you did come across a second hand rad it is likely to be knackered anyway. I think that you are going to have to bite the bullet and do what Brian and I had to do which is to buy a new rad.  :(

Well it is still under warranty from where I bought it last year. Hopefully it is something more trivial like a split hose or something?

Wish is something simple like that. I have the tendency to always adapt the worse case scenario, in this way I'm better prepared for the bill.
Rad found here used taken from a bike involved in an accident. Might get it for a price close to 400e new one here goes for 800e.

If it is under warranty I would be hoping it was the radiator which you might have to replace eventually anyway.   ::)

Is the head gasket. :O

F*"k this, the dealer can take it back and give my money back.

If it is still under warranty you should be OK.

Would be interested to know if that is a common problem on these engines. I've not heard of it before.

I've never heard of a head gasket failing, always a first time though.

There have been 'lots' of case of the HEAD warping or even cracking if the correct vacuum method is not used to refill the cooling system. Lots of DIY'ers who didn't bother with the pump created air bubbles in the head which causes hot spots and can cause the warping or cracking. Hope they check the head and block for true and cracks when they change the gasket.

Brian (who hates hot spots at the best of times, but on a cylinder head?  >:( )

PS I (and perhaps Tom) have a bleed valve on the top, right corner of the cylinder head to allow air out when refilling with coolant so don't need the vacuum pump, but I always use it.

AAtgh that hearts a lot. :-\ :(
I'm completely covered by Phmode.
IMHO we are again against the vacuum cleaning proses not properly made I though we had passed that long time ago and dealers behave but no they still do the old procedure by simply lifting the bike up in its rear Tyre and get over with it saves them a lot on labor and no need for tools nothing.  They never learn, damn it. >:( >:( >:(
Hope its only the gasket and nothing else inside, and in most cases damage is only contained outside, then its in warranty so they have to deal with it, and then you should find a proper dealer.
We should be left to trust our bikes but we should never trust our mechanics, that is the law.

Well I got it looked at by a second garage and was just a split hose. £220 I would rather have in the bank but not the drama I was originally told it was.

Overall, could have been an awful lot worse.

I thought that you said that it was still under warranty? It shouldn't have cost you anything.

I suspect hoses are excluded, but I didn't even look. Rubber perishes. If that is the biggest bill the bike gives me in a year I aren't too worried.

The three hoses cost 20,25,50 euros respectively, its the labor charges and the vacuum that rises the bill. In any way the fact that it was only a hose is at the end good news.

We are assuming that it was a BMW garage otherwise they might not have been aware that it has to be vacuum filled.

It'll be due new fluids in 600 miles for its 24000 mile service anyway. I am tempted to get it done at a main dealer.

You have to, otherwise how the hell they connect the PC with Germany ? erase all faults, and who is going to  do the recalls?
When you are for a job at a non authorized dealer just make sure they have the right tools and they are familiar with certain procedures.
For example, vacuum cleaning the system is not an easy job and the fact that some  mechanics do what was the old procedure (raise the back on its real wheel more than 40 degrees) is definitely not the proper way, not with a K bike anyway, air vacuum pump is used since pressure needs to be raised very high. Just a reminder not doing this the proper way leads to broken hoses, broken engines.
Its ok to do the oil change and many more minor jobs to save from labor, but this are things that can be done at someones garage easily, no need for an expert.
