K1600 GT & K1600GTL Forum / Weight and subsequent oversteer
« on: January 26, 2024, 06:45:28 pm »
As per an earlier post I swapped my old K1300GT for a new (to me) 2022 K1600GT a few weeks ago. The new bike is absolutely fantastic except for its enormous weight and consequent oversteer. Do other K1600 riders have problems with their bike’s weight and if so how do they manage it, especially when riding under 10mph and/or manoeuvring tight spots. At the moment it is quite embarrassing turning right into my drive as I sometimes end up in my neighbour’s drive! I find that using the Road or even the Rain mode helps but it is still difficult to execute tight turns, especially with my wife on board. Gawd knows what it will be like in the summer when we tour Europe!!

Any help will be gratefully received.

Tony

I used to put sticky plastic tape from B&Q across my radiator from just above the v to the very bottom from when they salt the roads till Spring. Also, as part of the 18,000 mile service I used to ask the mechanic to put the radiator under the outside tap to flush as much of the crap off as he could. From memory my last rad lasted around 6 years and was still working well with no overheating even with the tape onwhen I sold the bike 4 weeks ago.

I pick up the new (to me) K1600 on Thursday and intend taping up the radiator as soon as I can.

Out of interest the K1600’s use the same rad as the K12/1300’s so there should be a plentiful supply for many years to come

... This means that I will get two 18,000 services in the deal ...

And each time it is six spark plugs at £42 each before anything else. A really good move if you do the miles and will keep her for 5 years.

I certainly intend to!!

Hello James, I agree with Matt, Richtea and Flatfour. Speak to Bahnstormer and Village Motorcycles and explain your problem. You might be surprised at how helpful they are. Ask for their views on getting the bike MOTed and taxed so that prospective buyers can ride it. Beware of scammers and ensure they leave either their drivers licence, passport or something worth more than £5,000 when they ride off. Alternatively Google suitable motorcycle traders to see whether one of them might be interested. I have just sold my 2011 K1300GT that way and it was in far worse condition than your bike and had 125,000 miles on the clock.

As you might have guessed it’s like the Wild West out there so if you just want to sell the bike for a fair price I would suggest the motor trader route but bear in mind that they will be the ones getting the bargain, not you. But at least it keeps the baddies from your door who later reappear demanding a refund for some spurious reason.

Good luck and commiserations for your loss.

To let you all know I am buying the 5 year service plan for £1,460 so less than 300 quid per service. Not too shabby when you take into account the fact that it is a year and a half old so has already had its first service. This means that I will get two 18,000 services in the deal!! As the salesman said, I would have to be complete fool not to take advantage of his offer unless I do not intend holding on to the bike

Not so much sad as impressive!

What were the highs and lows in that 'just 20 miles short of 125,000' ownership - for other K / GT owners?

Since you've stuck with BMW, many more highs I guess!
;D

The highs were lapping the Mountain Course in 20 minutes, the lows were waking up in a bit of a sweat  ;) :) ;)p

Dealerships are always happy to see your money for maintenance. But if it comes to buying your second hand K1300S after spending all that money, they're not very interested. Then it sounds like (imagine the dealer's face as if he's in big pain) "Unfortunately, the K1300S is a very difficult bike to sell second hand, you know"...

Hence very unlikely I'll ever buy a BMW again.

In fairness BMW sold me the K1600 at a very competitive price. Only 1.5 years old, 5,600 odd miles and nearly £10,000 off the price new for an identical bike. Furthermore the motor trader was very generous and gave far more than BMW ever would.

As Brian said, all in all it has been a very nice Christmas present to myself.

I bought my K1300GT on 3 January 2011. After nearly 13 years and 124,980 trouble free  miles I have decided that the time has come for a change so today I put a deposit down on a very reasonably priced 2022 K1600 GT SE with all the bells and whistles. It will take a couple of weeks to raise the full asking price so should be on the road in 2 to 3 weeks’ time.

As the K1300’s age and mileage do not meet with BMW’s requirements I have had to sell the bike privately and the motor trader rode it away this afternoon.

A very sad day but I am eagerly anticipating the turbo charged flying armchair and new adventures next year. Christmas eh? Best time of the year to pick up a bargain motorbike 8)

I cannot understand the mentality of someone that buys a motorbike then does not ride it. Especially when five in a row of them do it!

Thanks Rae. The charging points are now "hidden" leaving me ith a clear screen.

Black K1 - connect your TomTom to your computer. Click the arrow to bring up the normal screen. Click Settings then Appearance, Show POI lists then Hide Charging Station. Quite simple when you have a Rae to show you how!! 8)

Aah! Yet another good idea Rae.  I will boot up my computer tomorrow and have a look at MyDriveConnect. I will let you know what happens.

Thanks Rae. A good idea but I am afraid that it does not work. There are my own POIs which I can delete then there are TomTom’s places which include Charging Stations and various biker themed places which I can not.

As ever, many thanks Rae for your time and trouble but it looks as though I am stuck with these pesky charging points for the lifetime of my TomTom. >:(

Hiya all, is there anyone out there who knows how to delete the charging points on a TomTom Rider 500? Apart from being completely useless in that I do not own or use any electric vehicles they also use up valuable memory.

Any help will be gratefully accepted ;D

Praise or Shame / Re: Silverstone Moto GP Tickets

Bob Hoskins appeared on my TV once and offered me a BT line at the normal price. I thought he'd decided it was good for ME to talk but turns out he was a talking slut and did it with everyone and anyone!
So it costs 65% more to watch a MotoGP in Portamao than it does at Silverstone?
