Not good.
« on: August 06, 2017, 08:26:00 am »
Had a disheartening chat with a dealer recently,i was thinking of changing the bike for another K1600 or a S1000XR, so asked what my 63 plate trade in value would be, he contacted me a few days later to say that no motorcycle traders would bid on it so he couldn't give me a figure, my best bet was to put it on eBay , i find this not very confidence inspiring in BMW motorcycles when it comes to changing. I had no problem trading in my old ZZR1400.

It would seem that even BMW Motorrad and BMW Group Fleet are sending some bikes to auction. The BCA auction house at Peterborough specialises in getting rid of bikes probably from PCP defaulters or whatever. Their next sale is the 25th August. Some examples are as follows:

A S1000 XR with 1 mile registered, F800R 1227 miles, R1200GS TE 1402 miles, R1200GS 255 miles.

Why these bikes are not in dealers showrooms is debatable. Many other makes listed. See link below.

One is tempted to suggest that you ask the dealer 'Please could you explain to me exactly why I should buy a new BMW K1600 motorcycle from you?' 🖕

...but, if none of his trade contacts will even put in a bid then he is stuffed and so is John. The independent dealers are sick of being stung under warranty for the K12/13s they have traded previously which speaks volumes...

However, if the main dealer you are buying from isn't offering a decent trade-in, then Kawasaki et al must be calling your name! The message from BMW is clear, a four year old K1600 is worth less than cuckoo spit to them, as will the next one.

Starting to think breaking the bike down might be an idea, £5000 for the engine is half price a new one and with all the other bits it's worth more in secondhand parts than a trade in I would have thought.

My logic was along the lines of anyone who bothered to post here (and not just a 'for sale' post) probably took some sort of care of their K - as opposed to random eBay/Autotrader private sales.
I may have been lucky of course...

This is so true. Having been an owner of BMW motorcycles since 1983, and since the demise of the K1300S with nothing in the same vein to replace it,  I doubt very much my next bike will be a BMW.

I used to buy BMW motorcycles because of two things:

 - They were a quality product;
 - They produced the best "do everything sports tourer";

They lost the first part some time ago and appear to have done nothing about it.  The trade in value (or lack of!) says it all.

Correct rear brake use is scientifically proven to shorten stopping distances in EVERY road situation.

Well the big K is soon moving on in the end. My local BMW dealer couldn't get me a trade in price so I went to the dealer who sold it to me, they gave me a trade in deal from one of their trade contacts of £7000, I already had an offer from we buy any bike of £7100. I was hoping for at least 8000. In the end they readily agreed to just discount a new or used bike by £1000 to make the figures work but and it's a big but as I am going into the big unknown Ducati offered me £8500 plus a discount on a 5 month old Multistrada 1200S touring package ex demo bike. So I have now had 4 ,6 and soon a 2 cylinder bike..
