Is this oil fine for the task at hand?

Yes, pop it in and enjoy. (Still talking about the oil here)
No, I wouldn’t fry chips in that muck

Has anybody used the service kits from Nippy Normans?

Good value?

I would be VERY wary of using anything other than the OEM oil. But that's just some of us...

My head says the same thing. It would have to be free and with a free horse that is also a helper monkey. Otherwise it's not a bargain enough to risk it. BMW.

It exceeds the ratings in the manual, and Silkoline have been around for years.
Is this really an issue?
Genuine question, I’m not arguing  ;D

Your choice but I personally will only use the BMW Advantec oil in my K1300S

As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Can I genuinely ask what is different about it then?
2 other chaps have said similar so I really need to know now! Ha ha.
Or is this one of those slightly tetchy subjects?
I’m genuinely looking to further my understanding of this.

This has been covered before, I think Costas came up with the technical details. Try a search.

This topic has been going round in here and elsewhere for decades now.

The engine and gearbox is not the issue. I would happily run mine on any old oil, well, new oil.

But then we have that small matter of the clutch. And therein lies the problem just waiting to bite you on the bum.

I bought a lifetime's supply of the Advantec at about £11 a litre from the Chermans a couple of years ago. And haven't ridden as far as an oil change ever since  ::)

So if we take £11 a litre and the kit is 4 litres then by my maths that means of the total cost of ~£133 just £687 £44 of it is the oil if it was the BMW stuff.

All I'm saying is that how much money are we possibly saving by not using BMW oil. It's not exactly going to be saving you £44 quid. And even if it did, that's bugger all, unless the intent is to prove it's fine. Much like I proved to my mother that you can have pasta instead of rice with a curry.

So to me the debate is pointless. If the amounts considered here are meaningful then the 'perceived' quality BMW should have been avoided. Is there any other justification?

Well this has got things fired up.
Not my intent, I had heard of these kits and thought I’d try one out.
If they are putting a package together such as this I would expect all the components to be suitable for
The task at hand.
But thought I’d get a general vibe for the stuff before I ordered it.
I didn’t realise this had already been covered in some depth previously.

I think you should buy one of these kits and let us know how it goes. After all Nippy Norman is the got to BMW site, isn't it?

The only problem you may have will be the clutch, but let us know if it affects it.

That was my thoughts entirely.
I assumed that was the place to go, and all would be good.
I was just looking for a smidgen of clarification re the matter.

I am going to make an assumption here, I think that Nippy Norman did what you did and looked at the specification of the oil and thought that it would be OK. It may be OK, however the BMW oil has some additives that they keep close to their chest.
Where is Costas when you need him?

The £11/litre was the mass buy discount price. Your local stealer will want the thick end of £18 from memory...
