Aren't these the symptoms when the right hand swich gear gives up? Is it as though the kill switch has been used?

You'r right, that was how it felt.  I did have this in mind

Has anyone experience of the following:

started the bike today and literally 30 seconds after it started it cut out.  Thought it was strange but when I went to restart it, it wouldn't start. I noticed the neutral light had gone, 1 wouldn't show when I selected first but 2 slowed when I clicked it into second.  Back into neutral and no light or display. Rocked it in gear still no neutral lights.  Eventually after a bit of cursing, changing in and out of first, pressing the start button and a bit more cursing the neutral light came back on.

Anyone got any ideas before I start throwing more money at it?

feels a bit like a thread takeover here...but... when you say cranking voltage is 10v is that after you take the load off? if so i'd say battery fault, even if it's while cranking i still say battery but with less conviction...i'd get that battery tested as chief suspect.

The 10v is during the actual cranking. Once the load is removed the voltage returns to 12.something

Had something similar happen when a regulator/rectifier failed.  They have diodes to stop current flowing back through the alternator to ground. See if you can measure current flowing back to earth with ignition off. if you cant do that disconnect the battery over night and don't put it on tender. If bike will fire up in the morning its less likely to be the battery.

Thanks for your suggestion.  With the battery connected and not connected to the charger the battery maintains it's charge over several weeks.  The battery only seems to discharge when the bike has been run.

Did the OP resolve his battery problems?

I've not had a chance to check the alternator amps but cranking voltage is just over 10V

Put a multimeter on the battery while cranking to start and see what the voltage drops to and report back

Thank you, I'll try that next.  A mechanic friend has suggested also measuring the Amps that the alternator is putting out but I'll need to get a clamp meter for that.

Weird was designed in to the K12/13 from the start...

16 miles is just about the lower limit for putting back what the starter takes out. They always used to reckon on a 20 mile fast run, and that was back in the day before we were all driving round with daytime running lights on, and in the case of the K, with dip beam sucking amps out to boot.

Firstly, what make and type of battery is it?

Second, when you start it at home, does it burst into life or have a few grinds of the starter before it fires?

As Rae says, it may be new battery time  ???

Hi, the battery is a Nitro YTX14-BS 12Ah and is a couple of years old.  Starting at home isn't a problem as the battery will have been on the Optimate - it starts immediately

Hey guys, I have the following issue which my little brain cannot fathom out......

I have a 2006 K1200s.  The battery is 2 years old.  I keep it on a battery optimiser when not in use and the battery will hold it's charge for weeks when not connected to the optimiser.  With the engine off the battery voltage is 12.8v.  With the engine running at about 2000rpm the battery voltage is 14.3V so presumably the alternator is charging the battery.

BUT.......

When I go for a 16 mile ride to work then park the bike for 4 hours the battery is flat and won't start the bike.

Common sense tells me the alternator is at fault although it is showing 14.3V on the meter at 2000rpm.

Anyone got any helpful information please?

Hey late to the party.

Yes, thats what I was thinking!
If you do have a spare, do let me know. Happy to cross your palm with silver (paypal).

I'm still looking - I have at least two bolts and the shaped spacer somewhere!

I used a threadlock compound on mine - maybe you should do this next time?

I might have a bolt and the spacers in my garage - I'll look tomorrow.

Apologies for reviving this topic but rather than start a new one........

BMW have just quoted me £530 to replace the ball joints on my K1200s.  Parts are £244 and labour is £198 then the dreaded VAT of £88.

I was unsure where to start this topic so I'll risk the moderators wrath and put it here.....

My K1200s' ball joints need replacing - anyone got any praise or recommendations for any independent mechanics in the South London/Surrey/East Sussex area.

Thanks

Job done but ex-wife phoning delayed the process slightly.

Anyway, lots of lubrication, a wiggle back and forward to find the right position, a big shove and it's in. All bolted up, wheel on and waiting for the rain to cease before test riding.

Currently having a cup of tea and polishing my driveshaft campaign medal.

If you pull back the front convoluted boot there is an access groove machined into the gearbox flange which allows access to encourage the driveshaft out and to guide the wayward Hooke joint in.  Saves fuffing about with string or wire etc.

Anyway, old shaft out by 9am.  Just had some breakfast and fingers crossed I'll be finished the job by 10am.

I've got LED's in the dipped and main beams. The unit has a light emitter on either side so, as RichTea mentioned above, there are no issues with only half the reflector being used on the main beam.  I have to say the LEDs are much better than the HIDs I have on my Japanese sports bike.

Ooooo. What make and model LEDs, Late?

These ones.........
