- Airtag doesn't work with Android

It does, sort of, because you can use a browser to login to iCloud.com and see where your devices are that way.

Seems you might be right anyway... FindMy on iCloud doesn't list AirTags.

My son went on a school trip to Berlin earlier this year and I put an AirTag in his backpack. It went missing on the way home and we spent the night watching it travel around London and then back to LHR the next morning. We could then see it sat in a warehouse for 3 days before being delivered back to us via Nuneaton.

The mention of the spare black plastic key triggered some distant memory, so I checked my key drawer and the folders you get with the bike. I've got a black spare key for the K13 and a grey plastic spare for the K16.

If you want a spare, seems they are about $4 from Alibaba.com https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Motorcycle-MOTORBIKE-Transponder-Key-With-Blank_1601032644495.html?spm=a2700.galleryofferlist.normal_offer.d_title.6ec86dcd4tih5O

I did consider an Apple Airtag or a Tile.
But both designs annoyed me:
- Airtag doesn't work with Android
- Tile battery isn'tr replacemable unless you buy the expensive (and thus annoyingly large) version.

So I decided to get a life instead.

When I really lose the key you can all have a hearty laugh at my expense.
You're welcome!

If you want to try the Tile I can make you this case for it.

Edit: do you know the numbers for Tile users? As I understand it Apple ones get tracked by Apple devices, Samsung by Samsung (although have they stopped now? I can't find the one I bought). How popular is Tile?

To Andy, a blank chip is interesting, but I'm guessing you need rather more than a GS911 to copy & encode a new one.

To Matt, the latest Tile Mate doesn't have a replaceable battery, so I'm not sure which variant that case is aimed it, but I guess it's an older one.
Amazon has the cheapie Mate for £11.99 this afternoon (spesh offer), so I bought one with no replacement battery, and sod the environment.  ::)

I'll have a play and let you know if it was 2 pints of Aspalls wasted.

Ah sorry, made an assumption!

No probs. You can lever the new (cheap) version open, but the CR2032 is soldered to the board.
De-soldering a battery doesn't feel wise to me. Hopefully it lasts more than a year...

Ok I've not given up. Read this:
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/05/bluetooth-tags-for-androids-3-billion-strong-tracking-network-are-here/
Seems we've now got more options and they're using Android now directly. Chipolo looks Tile-like but with replaceable batteries.

As an aside to AirTags etc., at which point in the laundry cycle was the key discovered?

Before the wash began?
During the wash with lots of metallic sounds emanating from the machine?
After the wash ended?
During the ironing process?

Just asking. Just in case  :)

You missed out the smell of melting plastic during tumble drying!  ;)

Rich, I've got some unused Tiles kicking around somewhere with replaceable CR2032 batteries if you want them?

Not sure which ones they are but probably Tile Pro so let me know if they are of any use and I'll dig them out and deregister them for you.

I stopped using them some time ago when I went over to AirTags.

Don't ask me how many of those I'm up to now... :o

I'm not sure about that, ignition keys might not be indestructible but they have withstood tumble driers before now. Not mine of course... 8)

---> Before the wash began

One of those meandering moments thinking 'Hang on! I'd never have cleaned the radiator in these trousers so .... that means - ohhhhhhhhhh, I know where it is.' Quick sprint upstairs. Hoo-bloody-rraahhhhhhh.

I looked everywhere except the obvious, not because I'd dismissed it, but because it was a out of sight place.
