Just in case you were considering any large European-sourced purchases in 2021:
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/dec/28/brexit-customs-duties-to-apply-to-eu-goods-worth-more-than-390

Goods up to the value of £390, or £270 for those arriving by private plane or boat, will be allowed through the green channel at airports. The notice states: “If a single item is worth more than your allowance you pay duty or tax on its full value, not just the value above the allowance.”

Just to note, my US purchasing experiences have shown that there's usually also an unavoidable 'handling fees' for applying duty - as in DHL charge you £10 for the benefit of taking £5 of duty. Bloody annoying.

I’m sure it will said many times in the future but don’t blame me I voted remain.....

Currently the only plus I see is the dollar is week against sterling, but apart from that all I see in the foreseeable future is mud and alligators  :(

Says the guy with a Japanese motorcycle...

And I'm with Chris and always was. And I have the sweatshirt to prove it!

However, this is going to get extremely boring because every day for the forseeable future and beyond, there will be a raft of announcements and 'reveals' about what will cost more, be in short supply or not even available and which organisations have moved off-shore, ie our shores.

Oh, and we can expect perhaps a couple of good days when we get over-hyped, sensationalised stories about something wonderful happening here in our dis-United Kingdom. Which would of course have happened whether we were in the EU or not.

This place was rip-off Britain before anyone had an excuse to charge the earth for things the rest of the world gets at a reasonable price, now they have all the excuses they need.

Still, makes a change from the horror stories about Covid...

No extra duty on this shy little British beauty, Rae.

That first photo just shouts 'Don't photograph it like this if you want it to sell'.

But teasing aside, you're right. If there's a chance to spend locally rather than abroad, then do so. Amazon and eBay are US, of course. Hey ho. sometimes it's tricky.

Iff you happen to have an ill-conceived sense of appreciation for ill thought out 'design' and even less well thought out manufacturing then you would be ripping his arm for a gem like that Richard...

It's a pretty simple philosophy, you want something, you buy it, if it's too expensive you don't. Things equal out.

Now, now - that's a bit negative.
I, for one, look forward to 'sucking it up' as all those fabulous EU-beating worldwide deals are unveiled.

Except when the things I want are not made in the d-UK Rae. We are sublime at science and technology, research and financial wizardry. But none of that is what I want to buy.

Fortunately, as long as we have motor racing as an incentive, we will also have world-beating engineering on a scale and to a depth that blows my mind, so I could still get my black stainless nuts, bolts and washers for my Honda lighting project, cheap as chips and free of p&p but gawd knows where they were actually 'made'.

Many years ago, a friend worked for a company specialising in the production of minute medical instrumentation and hardware. A US company sent them a sample of a drill bit which it claimed was unbreakable in use, would never lose its edge and was also the smallest drill bit 'in the world'.

The company sent it back with a very nice note telling them that it seemed to have a flaw as it had a hole drilled right through the middle of it...

My vote was remain not for me but for the poor sods who are not in my/our financial position, from a personal position no doubt we’ll be back to bad old days of carring a wad of paper work on the bike or car, as for extra cost of buying anything...always knew shovelling all that money into a private pension would come could good.... :)

Some changes coming to eBay too:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/selling/selling/vat-obligations-eu?id=4650

Extract:
Changes to VAT treatment of imports into the UK
The changes at a glance
  • eBay will collect and remit VAT on orders up to a value of £135 imported into the UK and sold to consumers. There will no longer be a VAT exemption for small consignments up to £15.
  • In cases where the seller is a non-UK business and the goods are already in the UK, eBay will collect and remit VAT for goods sold to consumers within the UK, regardless of their value.
  • If the buyer is a UK VAT-registered business and provides their valid UK VAT registration number, eBay will not collect UK VAT and instead the responsibility to account for VAT will switch to the UK VAT-registered business customer.
  • All sellers listing on eBay.co.uk will have to provide a gross price and separate VAT rate, so that eBay can determine the correct amount of VAT to collect from consumers. For non-EU/UK sellers, unless you have included UK or EU VAT in your pricing calculations, the VAT rate will usually be 0%.
  • All prices on eBay.co.uk will be displayed inclusive of UK VAT.
  • Where eBay is responsible for collecting VAT on orders sent to a UK delivery address, this amount will also be shown separately at checkout.

It's designed to close these sort of holes described on t'internet:
> The ebay problem will be sellers that appear to be private and based in the UK, but the goods are sent via a 3rd party from China.

Going the other way - exporting to the EU, I wonder how that affects the price of a high mileage K on eBay to the supposedly UK-based Polish dealer?

Isn't it a pity that a primary way of raising money to 'run' the country is only fuelled by spending. It is explicitly against the good of the people, which is in actuality 90% of the time saving.

I wonder if someone could come up with a better way :P.

"Hey we lower taxes we're cool... just don't stop buying 320ds, xboxes, houses, horses, stupid TVs every year ok."

"...p.s don't tell anyone but just in case you don't spend enough we're selling arms to war criminals... but offsetting it slightly by sending aid to their victims..."

Ahem. What's for dinner? :)

I have just been slapped with a £17.80 "tax" for $65 of T shirts and bits from Australia... was supposed to be delivered on 19th Dec, but they only "attempted" delivery on 28/12, leaving no note and i was home waiting to go to a funeral and no paper left....  Quite how they work out the tax from that is rather punitive, the admin fee was more than the tax as well.

That's almost 50%! That's one of the things that used to (there's more now) put me off Hobbyking and the like, never quite knowing the magical formula they'd choose to smack on at the end.
