Title: Wanted: Akrapovic noise reduction baffle
Post by: richtea on May 08, 2018, 04:32:41 pm
I'm after the screw-in noise reduction baffle that comes as standard with Akrapovic exhausts - the one that folks remove to increase the noise.
I want to put it back in, but my exhaust (secondhand) came without it.

They seem to be £50 new, but secondhand is fine for me.

Thanks in advance...

I am baffled by your aversion to a loud zorst, however if you insist it may be worth searching e bay for a generic baffle if you know the diameter.

Think the dealer should be stumping up for a new one now as this should have been picked up in the PDI.

I 'think' you'll find it was there when they did the PDI.

It was the previous owner who nicked the baffle.

The clue is in the thread title 'New to me!'

It's just the additional screw-in baffle I'm after, Costas, but you're right - Blue Flame does look v good value for money.
I've changed the description to make more sense!

They do provide parts at very reasonable prices , had two carbon cans on the F800ST and one for the track days in the big K , both lasted around six years until desegregation. Still both costed around 600 pounds all together . So am considering this a good value for money . Still got the baffle.

Pre-delivery inspection shouldn't only occur when the bike is new, but also when it is resold. When I bought mine second-hand from BMW I was told that the bike had to be serviced as per shedule & come with 12 months MOT as per terms of the BMW extended warranty. Full MOT would be the minimum one would expect.

Baffle missing on my bike when picked up as well. To be fair dealer sourced one and handed over to me. Funny when i then looked at my old bike, sitting in forecourt(swapped as trade-in). Its baffle was missing :o, at least i know that one was in good condition cause i only put it back in when i traded in 30th Edition bike.  ::).
Therefore dealer should be responsible for supplying baffle to you under their own Used bike policy etc.

All sorted, thanks. Motorworks had one - £20.
At that price, it's simpler than arguing the case with the dealer at MOT time (who is non-BMW, and would struggle to get one).

Oh, and my fallback - a std exhaust at £50, courtesy of eBay. 8)
I may yet lay claim to be the only eejit in the world to swap an Akra out ...

I'm pretty sure I have an unused standard can in the shed at home you're welcome to for £20 (plus postage). It came with my 2013 K1300S Sport which had an Akra fitted when new. Let me know if you're interested and I'll have a dig around the shed to confirm it's there.

That would be great. Thanks very much, David.

A small aside on general noise limits.

These apply to the manufacturer of the bike / exhaust, but the police appear to (vaguely?) use it for guidance:
http://www.europarl.europa.eu/facts_2004/4_9_5_en.htm

Directive 78/1015 established common limits for the sound level of motorcycles and technical requirements relating to exhaust systems (construction, materials and durability).
The most recent reduction lays down noise limit values of 75 dB(A) for vehicles of up to 80 cc, 77 dB(A) for those between 80 and 175 cc and 80 dB(A) for those of more than 175 cc.

It doesn't actually give instructions on how to measure it.

And an Essex police doc (possibly a national police doc?):
https://www.essex.police.uk/getmedia/5a4aaf2f-105f-419d-9ea4-2dd658945d07/H0504-Procedure-Loud-Exhaust-Offences.pdf

...the sound emitted by an exhaust fitted to a standard car must not exceed 80dB.  Some other vehicles, such as those with differing engine power e.g. HGVs, PCVs,motorcycles, etc. have higher limits up to 89dB.

So Essex police are generous by an extra 9dB = ~3 times louder, if I remember my dBs correctly.

There is certainly no benefit to replacing an Akra with the stock can.

Despite the BMW Akra having a cat (unlike an after market Akra) and weighing a ton, it is still lighter than the stock item and more free-flowing.

Also, with the dB killer in it is merely a pleasant note rather than no note at all and not intrusively loud.

Cash? A quite substantial wad of cash, in fact.  :o
But if I do end up removing it, I won't be selling it. The next owner will expect a Motorsport to come with an Akra.

Also, with the dB killer in it is merely a pleasant note rather than no note at all and not intrusively loud.

I'll test with and without baffle, and compare to the std exhaust, as a service to mankind.
I have a db meter app downloaded, and poised ready. I've set it up to listen for the postman.

If my MOT man doesn't add the following as an advisory, I'm disappointed.

Advisory. Exhaust noisy.

So if you are not going to sell it and release the wad of cash, why change it? It makes no sense to me.

Problem:
- t'Akra is too loud without a baffle

Steps to solution:
1. Add baffle, see if it's acceptable to ikle delicate ears
2. If not, buy and fit standard exhaust, which ikle delicate ears know to be just fine & dandy

Step 1 is in progress.
Step 2 is theoretical, the fallback position.

Makes sense to me.

You've ridden alongside, in front of and behind my K13, complete with dB killer equipped Akra, for hundreds of miles and for most of those we were making progress and unless you were merely being your ususal polite and inoffensive self, you never said ‘Cripes Brian, that pipe's a bit loud!'

When I first got my bike I tried it a couple of times without the baffle and it was fun especially when going for it and using the quick shifter.

I thought that it was too noisy without the baffle fitted and it got on my nerves after a while therefore it will remain fitted. I have disconnected the flap in the exhaust which makes the bike noisier at lower revs but the noise is acceptable and doesn't get on my nerves.

Exactly! A 'while' was just two rides for me.

With earplugs in - 38dB ones, well fitted.
