Title: Motorworks - shamed for data security breach
Post by: stevel on September 21, 2017, 06:30:11 pm
For anyone that hasn't heard, Motorworks have had a load of customer data stolen. Customers affected have received an official looking email (complete with lots of personal details - full name, address, phone number etc) telling them they're being given a free helmet - all you have to do to get it is click the link and put in your credit card details to pay for shipping...

I've given up on Motorworks - this is the final straw after numerous problems I have had with them, and I really wish I'd never had the misfortune to have encountered them.

There's a statement on their website:

Bit harsh. Some of the largest tech-savvy corporations on earth have been hacked, what hope for a small bike breaker?

If you have problems other than the hack that is a different matter.

Anyway, here are my credit card details so if you get the mail, put my details in and send the helmet to me, pea sized please...

So Motorworks, who probably have little expertise in setting up secure web sites, outsource their web site production and hosting to a reputable third party, who then get hacked, and that's Motorworks fault? Assuming that the hosting company are reputable then that's like blaming you because your bike was stolen from the dealers whilst it was being serviced.

By all means be upset your data was stolen, but lay any blame for lack of care at the right door!

I've used Motorworks a few times and will probably use them again in the future.

Especially when they send me my carbon fibre lid. Funny they never asked me what size I wanted.  ::)

I think it's a one-size-fits-all kind of thing, Tom. A bit like some stretchy socks!

As for laying the blame at the right door, I gave my data to Motorworks. It's their responsibility to look after it, no matter the size of the company. I don't get to choose their business partners that build their systems, so I blame Motorworks. A lot of my personal details are now in the hands of criminals, ready for them to try their worst. I have been exceedingly careful with my personal data over the years, which has been completely undone by Motorworks. If's not as if I can easily change my name, address or phone number.

For those of us that remember writing cheques, you gave away your bank details every time you wrote a cheque, I don't see it as a big deal. If and that's a big IF you bank account gets hacked the bank will refund you immediately.

The point is that criminal activity has happened. That's not Motorworks fault! The question then is "did Motorworks take reasonable precautions"? Given they used a reputable hosting company then yes,  they did take reasonable precautions.

The blame lies firstly with the criminals who stole the data. Possibly some blame lies with the hosting company for not doing enough to protect the data.  Assuming the hosting company are reputable then Motorworks are, like you,  innocent victims in all of this.

To dislike Motorworks is your choice but don't publicly blame them for something where they are a victim and not the perpetrator.

That was Jeremy Clarkson's belief.  Ask Google what happened when he published them  in his newspaper column!

The list of organisations who have some or all of my details and who have been hacked, is getting tiresomely extended! LinkedIn was the last one I can think of. Were I to stop doing business with them all, then mine would be a very lonely and old-fashioned world.

If you never, ever, ever want your details to be stolen, there is only one course of action; never, ever, ever give them to anyone. Including me!

That is because I, EuroKClub.bike, hold some information about you and we take no precautions whatsoever to keep those details secure; I wouldn't know where to begin. All of that security is devolved to our hosts.

If a thief wants your details, just like if they want your bike, then it is a case of 'gone in 60 seconds' or so! All of your details are 'out there' anyway. A seven-year-old with a phone could compile your entire autobiography in a matter of hours if they so wished, and that is without hacking anything.

By all means stop dealing with Motorworks, but don't blame them for their hosting company getting hacked, there isn't one in existence which is totally secure.

Reminder!
We have a minimal security password system on EuroKClub
As mentioned in previous posts  - your EuroKClub password is not encrypted over the air, so do NOT use a password on EuroKClub that you would use on, say, your banking website.

But then again, there's not a lot stored about you on here, so we don't regard it as great issue.

End of public announcement.  ;D

Yeah, but whilst we're here, it's worth saying that our EuroKClub security has improved since 2017.
So, rewriting that post above:

Reminder!
We have a good security password system on EuroKClub
As mentioned in previous posts - your EuroKClub password is definitely encrypted over the air.

But still don't use a password on EuroKClub that you would use on, say, your banking website.

End of revised public announcement.

Here's what they told Trump:
"The red button password is 1234, Donald. Easy to remember in a crisis."

I think we're safe.

1) He'll never remember. 2) It's not.
