And the uneveness left to right - I think there were two hypotheses:
- camber (a theory that coud be easily proven/disproven by some US/Euro members telling us their experience - is it the left side that's worn most?)
- and the other can't remember. Rats.  :(

Is it that where we drive on the left, every left hand corner is shorter than every right hand corner, which adds up over the life of a tyre?

I had noticed the same some time ago. Looking again at my back tyre a little closer now, shows the same kind of edges (sharp and smooth, respectively areas 1 and 3). At some angle (area 2), the sharp edge starts becoming smoother. I guess this is caused by more frequent (engine/pedal) braking starting at these angles. But I don't worry, everything feels normal, it's a great tyre after all  :)
