So at the risk of pouring fuel on to the bonfire, is there a similar recommendation for oil for a 2008 K1200S before I venture down to the sparkly new BMW garage in Falmouth to have my wallet mugged?

There are many but none have the new additive, now if you ask me if this domn think work unfortunately have no answer. On the other hand found that good quality oils are expensive too (AMSOIL) comes to mind. Still agree with you  the price BMW is asking is a clear ripoff.
Having tried all brands am back to OEM and the bike still burns 600 grand per 1000kms.

So what is this miraculous new additive that they have put in the oil? Is it the same as what would go in other bikes where the oil is shared with the clutch?

In that case, I'll just remain sceptical.

I had a K1300S for a couple of days as a loan bike while my K1200GT was being fixed. I know what they are capable of, they make anyone look like a good rider, going around bends all by themselves and very good for filtering. I managed to hit triple digits in 3rd gear and thought this bike will get me nicked if I'm not careful, I remember saying out load to myself "Oh my giddy aunt".

Before BMW changed suppliers it was Castrol Power 1 5W - 40 which was only available from BMW dealers. So if you can now find it else where these days that would be ok. The engine doesn't know that BMW changed the spec. I spoke to Castrol and they told me that it would be OK to use 10W - 40 for top ups. His parting comment was "any oil is better than no oil".
