K1200 / K1300 Forum / Re: K1300S/R supercharger kit
« on: November 23, 2023, 08:33:10 am »
Hi Antonio and welcome!

Like Matt, I have now moved away from the K1300 world (to the supercharged world as it happens :D ) so I'm not your target audience.

If I did have a K1300S there are a couple of things I'd be interested in knowing:

1. Do we know if the K1300 engine, gearbox and drive train is up to handling <300bhp and. more importantly, the huge increase in torque that will come with the engine being charged?
2. Is there any documented experience of anyone previously charging (super or turbo) one of these engines? (Perhaps in the 3-wheeled car world?)

I have no doubt TTS performance would develop a quality piece of kit that would deliver something substantial but my concern would be whether or not the engine would still be working 10,000 miles later.

So, there and back hotel details now added to the first post in the thread.

From here we now have black-k1, fjtwelve, Matt & Grumpy jase on the trip

As detailed in the first post, accommodation and Channel crossings will total just over £900. Even I have been pleasantly surprised that the overall cost for 9 nights B&B in a minimum of 3* hotels, with Channel crossing there and back, still only totals around £100 per night.   :thumbsupgood:

How many different routes there are round a magic roundabout?

ChatGPT:
There's a famous magic roundabout in Swindon, UK, with five mini-roundabouts arranged in a circle. If you're talking about that one, you can technically take 8 different routes around it. It's like a vehicular choose-your-own-adventure!

Is it true? That's an exercise for the reader.  :P

I'm not sure how it gets to 8.

It's been a while since I've driven across the Swindon Magic roundabout, but used to live nearby and did it quite a lot when I was much younger, including as a learner.  Once you make you initial "Am I going right or left?" decision, you're more or less committed, and just keep going in that direction until you get to the exit you want.  With 5 mini-roundabouts, there is an optimum, route, as one way will always require fewer mini's than the other.  I always tended to go left, as it felt more familiar.

Assuming you know which exit you want, I can't see there is anything more than the initial Left or right choice?  To get to 8 different routes, would require you to do U turns at one of the mini-roundabouts, and if you allow for that, there is an infinite number.  This is what terrifies people, as some get so confused they are just going backwards and fforwards, without ever reaching their exit.

The main assumption in the response is that, while you can cross your path, you can't repeat a path, so the number of U turns is limited to the number of roundabouts. Likewise, the other assumption is that you can't do 360 degrees or more on any given roundabout, mini or main so you can't include the mini roundabout you start on. That's how you get to 8.

However, 8 includes the situations where you will be required to go past your exit- before going around a mini roundabout to come back to it. Something any "thinking" driver/rider is not going to do. (Unless the Mrs in the passenger/pillion seat is saying "That way ... no, that way ... no that way!" :D- )

Remind me - who was the bloke that initiated it again? I can't quite recall his name now he's lost in the mists of time. >:(

Over half of the UK! That's how democracy works!

Sounds about right but it does mean you'll go past on the "other side" of the mini roundabout for your exit to then come back to it later, or go the "wrong way" at the entrance to then come back past the entrance.

At any entrance you can go left or right. Each direction offers a total of 4 mini roundabouts, one of which you'll use to exit. 2 directions x 4 mini roundabouts = 8 possible routes (without re-tracing any of your steps or going more than 360 degrees any roundabout, mini or main).

How To - Tech & Forum support / Re: Coolant level check.
« on: November 11, 2023, 07:42:24 am »
Given the expansion tank is just a resevoir for the coolant to expand into and draw from as it cools and contracts, and that it has a vent to the outside, why would it matter if it's over filled? The worst that will happen is it'll spit some excess coolant out the vent.

Fill it until you're sure, by looking down the neck of the filler to the coolant level, that it's at or past MAX, put the lid on and leave it.

Hi David,
Reports of previous trips look really good, and I've looked at my plans for next year, and think I'd like to join you.  The format of the trip looks to suit me well, and I've ridden in the French Pyrennes before and loved it.  Is there a little flexibilty available for when I join and leave the group, as I'd plan to take a Plymouth - Roscoff crossing, meet you all in Brive-La-Gaillard stay with group until you all leave Lourdes, and find a different (slower) route home, as I'm not so keen on big mileage days on the motorways?  I'm more than happy to sort out my own crossings, and any hotels outside the ones you are using for the group, but would like to take advantage of the rest of the booking, and the company of like minded souls, plus I can add to the K13's on the trip.
Jason
Thanks for the interest in the trip. The 6 nights in the Pyrenees are "the trip"  so you are welcome to arrange the "there and back" in any way that works for you.

PM me or contact me through the Old Gits web site and I'll start the arrangements to get you onto the trip. There is the requirement for a £250 non-refundable deposit when booking onto the trip but that goes entirely towards your hotel costs.

I'm looking forward to meeting you.  :winkthumbs:

And surely Richard deserves a (dis)honourable mention in despatches for a 'near miss', David. The thought was there, or maybe it wasn't ...

Ah. The cockup is mine, and purely mine, not David's, for which I have apologised, and made sure he will not be out of pocket should a hotel room go unfilled.
I hadn't realised that two holidays overlapped by a couple of days - and the other holiday isn't even mine. Grr.

Just to say for anyone thinking of going - it is good, really good, on several levels - the hotels, the rides, the good company, and of course the fact that David has completely smoothed the way for you. It's the sort of thing you would pay a tour operator through the nose for - David does it for free.
And I'm gutted not to be able to go next year.  >:( >:( >:(

Thank you for the recommendation. There is no out of pocket on my part, but thanks for offering. You are, of course, very welcome on future trips.

Sorry Brian, I don't do dishonourable mentions. People have their own reasons for attending or not attending trips and those reasons are important to them.

Planning such trips is a challenge that I mostly enjoy, but still a challenge (And a really big challenge!!!) Perhaps surprisingly, one of the most difficult things I do is to tell someone who wants to come on the trip that they can't because there is no more capacity. I feel their disappointment. Knowing what is required of me at the earliest opportunity makes managing that challenge possible and avoids that disappointment, hence my request for people to commit early.

I can now confirm that the cost of the hotels and the crossing will come to less than £900. Personally, I think that's pretty reasonable for 9 nights B&B in a single occupancy room in 3* hotels, with secure parking for your bike, plus the Chunnel. There are still places available so let me know if you're interested in joining Matt, fjtwelve and myself from this forum, plus 8 others. BMWs, and particularly K1300S's, are currently under represented on the trip although all bikes welcome.

Have to say the M1000XR does look stunning. I know it's not up everyone's street, but I really suit these style of bike, and with 200hp packed into 14,600rpm, just wow!

£22k for the base model and £28 for the full M Pack, but I suppose that compares to the Ducati V4RS Multi coming in at £32k  :o

Stupid prices.

It makes the H2 SX SE Performanx Tourer (every add-on you can get) seem a bargain at £28k Even adding a set of BST carbon wheels and a heated Sargent seat only takes it to £32k. The bhp may be similar but over 100 lbft is in a completely different league. ... and it has luggage!!!!

I think my Helite Turtle 2 includes a limited neck brace function if it's activated. Does that count?
