Tyre wear planning
« on: March 07, 2025, 11:10:26 am »
I'm off to France and Spain in June and wondering if I've got enough tyre wear for the tour. I'm on Angel GT type A. Does anyone have a wear rate per 1,000 miles for this set up, or an estimate?
I have 2.8mm front, 4.5mm rear at the moment.
I estimate the trip to be in the 1,500 miles or less plus a bit of local stuff before.
It seems a shame to chuck out tyres with this left, but not sure if it's a good idea to hang onto them for the trip.
What would you do?

It would be an ideal opportunity to get some tyres in France, tyres are considerably cheaper in France. I can't remember the exact figures but I think it was about a 40 quid saving on 1 tyre. I used Dafy Moto. If I find the exact figures I'll post them up.
Dafy Moto are all over France.

Never used the Angels so no idea.

I would try to get a list of local tyre dealers (with prices) for where I think I 'might' need new ones and then trust to luck. Let's face it the French and Spanish riders all need new tyres almost all year round so there must be plenty of local places.

I just googled 'Motorcycle tyre dealers in Spain' and got some good results and also a recommendation from a guy on UKGSer. A couple of phone calls to some of the dealers has got to be worth it. If they don't speak English there's nothing lost. Unless of course you speak Spanish... :)

It will depend on your riding style, but I got 5,500 - 7,000 miles from both front and rear (from three sets). If you know how long you've had them on for that might give you some guidance.

Personal gut feel but 2.4mm sounds a bit close, whereas 4.5mm is good.

I've no idea as to wear rates of the tyres but I'd not trust 2.5mm to deliver 2000 miles. The question is, would you be happy ridding the run home from the tunnel, fully loaded from a trip, with it pissing down, on less than 1.5mm of tread depth? I know I wouldn't!

When I've been on trips and people have needed tyres, there's never been a real issue in getting them and the price has always been reasonable (except in Switzerland!!!) but it always takes the best part of a day out of your trip. That's time I'd rather have for riding having paid in time, effort and money just to get there.
Correct rear brake use is scientifically proven to shorten stopping distances in EVERY road situation.

Hm yeah it's the squaring off as well as the pure mm number.

Given the trip is in June you should be using the next few months...3 months... as your time to get out as often as possible, get your riding mind into the best place it can be whilst also getting these tyres to the proper end of their life.

It's much more fun in that there Europe mainland with fresh tyres! :)

Yes, new before the trip is decided now, particularly as front needs a new TPMS valve. Thanks for the comments.

Before last years Old Gits, I had the same dilemma with  the rear tyre which would probably last, but I wasn't really sure.  I just got new ones, but kept the part worn rear for re-fitting later.  Cost £15 for re-fitting, but was probably only 1/2 worn, so saved overall.

I used Angel Gt's on my Kawasaki GTR 1400. They seemed good, though the wear rate was (at least on that and my other kawasaki) far higher than the Michelin PR5/6GT that I use on the BMW. I really don't think that either tyre will make it!
