Scott Leathers (air bag suits)
« on: November 21, 2024, 06:41:03 pm »
[moved over from the air bag thread]

I've just ordered a Scott Leathers made-to-measure two piece suit with the new inner Helite inner air bag. Expansion panels are standard.
Pie-related extra volume compensation wasn't offered.

Why?
I came to the conclusion it's better to actually buy one rather than keep putting it off. That, and Ms Cashmere forgot to put a limit on my credit card before I visited Motorcycle Live. ;D

The inner Helite is also pretty tidy IMHO. It's the first time I've seen one.
It's electronic so you need to charge it, and electronics are more likely to go wrong compared to a strap. But I value the convenience more.

The (potentially) slightly sub-standard CRITT tests that Helite conforms to isn't quite so worrying to me, i.e. tests where you can poke a sharp object between the bladder areas, because the Helite is inside the passive protection of back and chest protectors. The passive protection is going to take the initial hit/poke/jab, not me or the Helite.

The expansion areas give me the option to swap the airbag to a different model another year if CRITT is found to be sub-standard - at a cost, obvs.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Well that didn't go well.

The owner of Scott Leathers, Jim Aird, does not answer emails even though he reads them, as proven by our single phone conversation where he requested full payment. With no evidence of progress, a firm timescale or even the final cost (I said 'no' before we got to that detail).
He also doesn't seem to answer the phone.

So after 10+ weeks and almost zero communication back from them, I have requested my deposit back via Mastercard.
Scott Leathers have the option to contest it of course, but 'they’ll [need to] provide evidence and explain why you should pay for the transaction(s)'.
I don't see them being successful.

Their off-the-peg stuff is well made, and you have comfort of knowing it exists(!), but I would definitely not recommend ordering anything bespoke from them.
A real shame.

So, back to square one - possibly Hideout or maybe an external air bag on top of my existing kit - maybe the MotoAirBag M1 similar to Rae's.

[goes off to think a bit longer than last time]

Oh shoot. Thank you for the factual account young Richard, that's disappointing, and so reminiscent of "we have cash flow problems, so instead of trying to build/keep a good relationship with customers we'll lie instead and burn them!" approach that somehow many small businesses still do. In 2025. When the internet exists.

Oh, and now - i know, chickens already flew away etc - I just looked at Companies House.

Interesting that they were almost struck off. Though tbh I have yet to remind myself of the drivers for that and whether it was just an admin type issue or they were accidentally murdering geese. I could ask ChatGPT but I think i've spoken to that thing enough today!

I'm sorry to hear things haven't gone well. My wife had a set of textiles made by Kate at Hideout and the service was excellent.

Nice suggestion Chris. Not heard of them, but anyone who can keep their Google reviews up at 5.0 average from 208 reviews is bloody good! Their website is:

My only problem might be getting a large enough suit to bring down in size, which is presumably the most efficient way to approach it.

I'll tuck that thought away for later.  ;D
