K1200 / K1300 Forum / Antigravity Battery Tracker +PLUS
« on: April 29, 2024, 06:59:05 pm »
I am a sucker for tech gadgets.

I saw this a couple of days ago;

https://antigravitybatteries.com/products/accessories/battery/chargers/btr3-bluetooth-tracker/

Unlike the earlier models it is compatible with both Lead Acid & Lithium batteries and seems to have some nice features in the associated app.

Enquired with the UK Distributor who unfortunately only just received his monthly pallet from Antigravity US who did not tell him about the new device so no stock in UK AFAIK which is a pity as I would have purchased two - one for the car and one for the bike!

PS. Maybe I should have posted this in Comms & SatNav Corner (including Trackers) as it does have Tracker in the subject line... ;)

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Fitting K1300S mirrors on a GT?
« on: January 12, 2024, 01:33:24 pm »
I've been thinking...and I'll warn you all now that could be a very dangerous thing...about the possibility of replacing the mirrors on my K1300GT with those from the S what with its fancy indicators and all and wondering whether they would fit?

I don't know what the S mounts look like and whether they might be a straight swap for the existing GT ones and I would probably have to drill a hole to get the cabling through before finding a neat & proper way to connect to the existing harness so am asking here if anybody might have any idea of whether they would fit or not?

TBH I'm not even sure if I will like the different shape or not as its just an idea swirling around in the cesspool that is my mind at the moment so maybe I should take a closer look at an S first to decide if;

a) I like the look of them
b) If the view compares favourably with the existing ones
c) Do they use the same mounting & swivel arrangement

But I thought I'd ask here first anyway...

Thanks & kind regards,

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Anyone have a copy of Kevin Ash K1300GT road test?
« on: October 02, 2023, 06:41:17 pm »
Having read almost every article/road test/review I can find on the whole of t’Internet regarding the K1300GT the one article that I see references to but that seems to be unavailable is Kevin Ash reporting his findings on the K1300GT.

I have read other articles by Kevin before his tragic demise (RIP) and enjoyed his articles very much even his K1300 vs K1600 torque findings most of which went over my head!

I was wondering if anybody on here had managed to archive his K1300GT road test and if so would it be possible to share please?

It’s one of the few articles that doesn’t seem to have been reproduced on his website.

Thanks & kind regards,

Blatantly stolen from another biking forum but so true-to-life it is worth posting a second time!

How many internet forum members does it take to change a light bulb?

1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed

14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently

7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs

1 to move it to the Lighting section

2 to argue then move it to the Electricals section

7 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs

5 to flame the spell checkers

3 to correct spelling/grammar flames

6 to argue over whether it's lightbulb or light bulb ... another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid

2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is lamp

15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that light bulb is perfectly correct

19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a lightbulb forum

11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum

36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty

7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs

4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's

3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group

13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add Me too

5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy

4 to say didn't we go through this already a short time ago?

13 to say do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs

1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again.

1 mod to lock it down after it goes off-track for the nth time...

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Correct oil filter wrench?
« on: August 13, 2023, 12:12:10 pm »
Apologies for the many posts over the last few days but this is my first strip down on the K1300GT so I have had/will have many questions.  8)

Although not intending to change the engine oil/filter at the moment as it (and the oil) looks very clean having been changed at the last service in February I purchased an oil filter wrench from Nippy Norman’s to replace the Yamaha Thunderace wrench in my roller cab that doesn’t fit the BMW.

Expecting it to be shallow enough to slip between the gear change bracket and get a grip on the filter I found it is too deep to fit in the gap.

Not sure if the GT is different to the S/R but short of maybe a strap wrench or poking a screwdriver through it to remove it (not tighten it up) ;) is there a ‘proper’ filter wrench that will fit without taking even more of the bike to bits just for a routine service item?

Thanks & kind regards,

K1200 / K1300 Forum / K1300GT air filter?
« on: August 10, 2023, 03:22:55 pm »
Guess it’s true…the more you look the more you find.

Had to remove the air snorkel to get to the horn harness so the air filter was removed also.

It’s a Mahle LX 1892 dated 24/8/2011 so only 12 years old although it can’t be original as the bike was built a year previous and registered 9 months prior.

The bike was purchased brand new from NOG and has had every service carried out there including the last one at 21k miles in February a fortnight before I bought the bike.

Just rang them up but not in stock and £35.89 from Germany.

Guess that’s why they’ve never changed it then.. >:(

Looked at Nippy Normans for a replacement but didn’t see one listed outside of a service kit which is also out of stock.

Any idea where I might be able to get hold of one quickly as I’m wanting to put the bike back together in the next day or so?

Thanks & kind regards,

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Fairing bolts…lots of ‘em!
« on: August 10, 2023, 11:08:02 am »
I’ve removed fairings from all of my bikes at one time or another usually to replace Philips screws with colour-coded Allen bolts which are not needed on this bike mostly being T25 but also to give things a good clean and familiarise myself with what lurks behind but I don’t ever recall having so many bolts/screws to deal with as in this K1300GT to the point where I’m not sure;

a) Whether I’ll remember which bolt goes where?
b) If they were even in the right place in the first instance!

I have to ask if any of you guys have a method for remembering where the correct bolt goes as I was thinking the idea of some templates made out of cardboard or something with a rough outline/panel description and 5mm holes to drop each bolt in as it is taken out would be a good idea.

I do recall seeing some info on my repair DVD showing which size bolt goes in which hole but would prefer something a little more elegant and don’t want to re-invent the wheel if anybody has already devised a solution similar to this that they might share or am I in a minority of one herded down this path by my OCD combined with my yearning for an easier life?  ;D

I’ve not even removed the top part of the fairing yet as it looks to be the most complex piece and there are already too many T25 bolts of varying lengths strategically placed all over the floor to begin with!

And I really should have posed this question before I started;

Is it best to remove the panels from the bottom up, top down or doesn’t it matter in which order they are removed/replaced?

Thanks & kind regards,

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Never heard of this recall...
« on: August 07, 2023, 05:07:25 pm »
As NOG refuse to give me any details on which recalls for my K1300GT they have completed citing GDPR I rang BMW Motorrad Customer Service and asked them the same question.

They were very helpful and told me that the following recalls had in fact been reported as being completed;

1. Fuel Pump (9/5/2014) - although they couldn't tell me exactly what had been done; inspection/flange/pump etc.

2. Cam chain jump guide (4/2/2013) - not sure if just the plastic guide or tensioner/o-rings etc.

3. Pivot mount relay lever strut (10/1/2011) - never heard of this one or seen any mention of it before and believe me I've read a LOT!

All 3 dates above tie in with stamps in the service book.

They had no record of the hot start auxiliary harness having been done although looking at the two cables connected to the positive battery terminal, strapped & routed together disappearing into the depths of the engine would appear to me maybe it has.

Has anybody else heard of the 'pivot mount relay lever strut ' issue before or am I suffering from selective memory?

Thanks & kind regards,

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Denali Soundbomb on GT
« on: August 07, 2023, 03:07:37 pm »
I seem to be on a roll today as this is my 3rd post this afternoon... ;)

I've done a search and it doesn't look like anybody has fitted a Denali Soundbomb to their K1300GT or have they?

I don't know whether I should go for the;

Soundbomb Compact;
5.4” wide x 4.5” high x 3.6” deep

or if space is too tight;

Soundbomb Split;
Compressor: 4.5" x 2.9" x 3.0"
Acoustic Unit: 4.1" x 3.7" x 3.4"

As I mentioned in a previous thread most of the tupperware is off at the moment (although I  haven't removed the upper fairing section just yet) so I'm still not sure where the existing horn is or more importantly if/where I might have the space to install either Soundbomb or if I might need a bracket of some type?

There seems to be a decent amount of space on the shelf in front of the ABS unit but not sure if that would be a good location or not as the idea is to direct the 120dB at those twats who might endanger me while I'm out riding rather then be reflected around the inside of the fairing ending up bathing my own ears in the glorious sound of airhorns!

Any thoughts, suggestions, inspiration would be gratefully received!

Thanks & kind regards,

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Motobatt MB51814 spare terminal request?
« on: August 07, 2023, 02:01:30 pm »
As I have most of the tupperware off the GT for an inspection and clean I decided to fit the Hex ezCAN device while access was wide open and so located the device itself where the cheap & tacky reversible screwdriver used to go which was a perfect position to connect into the DWA plug & harness and dress the cables including running the long cable through to the battery.

Noticing the second set of battery terminals opposite the existing (or at least the blanking plugs where they could be fitted depending upon handing of the bikes wiring harness - see photo) I figured it would make it a nice, neat job if I could connect the ezCAN connections to this other side of the battery leaving just the two (actually three - is the second heavy duty positive cable signs of the poor hot start retrofit harness recall?) heavy duty OEM cables where they are. I know from experience the more you disturb battery terminals the more you risk upsetting the electronics, stripping the threads when tightening and I don't like to see ring cripps on top of ring crimps on top of...well you get the idea.

While I'm at it I am also renewing the poor quality, badly routed harness to the cigarette lighter adaptor in the faring inner panel as it was too short and it looked like the crimps had been put on with the cutting edge of pliers rather than a proper crimping tool.

Seeing Motobatt are in the US I rang their distributor Hendler in Goole to check that I could indeed utilise both sets of terminals which they confirmed I could but they do not have any in stock although they are expecting a container in a couple of weeks time.

They gave me the telephone number of Race IT in Doncaster as the best bet but they too have no stock and said they were the old type terminals anyway.

Not wishing to stick a couple of very short 6mm bolts of unknown provenance directly into the battery I was wondering if some kind soul might have an old battery with unwanted terminals or a spare set of these terminals & the short securing bolts kicking around please?

The bike had a new Motobatt battery two weeks before I bought it at the end of February which according to the previous owner was the second one since 2014 so I could at a push contact him to see if he might still have the old one kicking around but thought I'd throw it out here first.

Thanks & kind regards,

Doing some research I have seen a couple of genuine BMW SatNav mounts suitable for a K1300GT as unlike some other K1300 models I am unable to use a RAM type ball mount in the steering yoke because the adjustable bars seem to obscure the centreline.

I have however seen what looks like a plastic cover that replaces the existing plastic cover that tidies up the rear of the adjusting bolts that has a mount built into the top putting the mounting plate pretty close to the bottom in the gap between the middle section of the bars if that makes sense?

I have seen this with two different part numbers but in addition there seems to be a metal mount that picks up on the same mounting holes but sits behind the existing plastic cover.

Both of these are difficult to explain and as I still can't post photos properly despite following the instruction its the best I can do!  >:(

I wonder if any of you have one of the following BMW parts on your K1300GT and if you can shed some light on exactly what these items are please?

71607676868

71607688662

BMW tell me the part numbers are correct but the parts are not available and despite my asking if they could check other dealer stock etc. I am not convinced they did.

Out of desperation I have ordered the latter of the two parts from eBay but the seller in Lithuania can't even list his own auction correctly and the drawing he sent me shows a different part to another seller from Bulgaria but with an identical part number!

And despite me paying £29 for it two weeks ago I haven't received confirmation of postage and the expected delivery date is showing as 21-29 June so I expect he is one of those sellers who advertise things they don't have in stock and am expecting the worst.

I was looking at the Bike Pen R type of mount (Wunderlich also make a similar mount to the BPR) but I prefer the factory mount if at all possible.

Does anybody have any experience of any of the above part numbers or possibly one lying around they might care to sell?

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Replacement clutch & front brake levers?
« on: April 10, 2023, 06:58:51 pm »
Well for the first time in my biking career I am looking to change specifically the clutch lever not because I've scraped the end on a wall but because its just a stretch too much for my dainty handspan!

Strangely even though I have those little plastic adjusters all the way out against the expanded thread used as a stop the clutch is actually 20mm further away from the grip than the front brake lever which is a perfect fit for me.

I wish there was a way to adjust/bend the existing clutch lever so it brought it closer to the bar but looking at it doesn't appear to be able to modify it without it breaking.

Can anybody recommend a high quality adjustable clutch & brake lever (my OCD couldn't live with two different types) that's not too blingy and would allow me to adjust the clutch that 20mm or so closer to the bar please?

I was tempted to remove that little plastic adjusting screw from the lever but that would break it and would leave a metal-to-metal contact against the cylinder mechanism which is probably not a good idea.

I rode every day over the Bank Holiday weekend covering 160 miles on Friday, 150 miles on Saturday with a modest 85 mile ride yesterday and my left hand is feeling a little worse for wear today.

Thanks & kind regards,

To save me tearing the bike down more than I need to does anybody know the location of the factory fitted GPS connector on the BMW harness please?

I ordered the Repair Plug 3-pin 83300413585 from BMW for the princely sum of £9.05 which is the plug/lead that connects to the factory fitted connector.

I’ve had a quick look around the headstock and battery compartment but never noticed this factory fitted connector lurking anywhere?

If anybody knows exactly where it is on a 2010 K1300GT could you let me know please?

Also I’ve seen mentions of an retrofit socket and part number 71607697689

Does anybody know exactly where the socket itself is fitted and where it plugs into the harness please as the drawing shows the socket comes with what looks like its own Y harness terminated with the appropriate connectors?

Thanks & kind regards,

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Front paddock stand
« on: April 01, 2023, 03:26:38 pm »
Hi there,

Looking around for a good quality front paddock stand for my K1300GT and wondered what you guys might be able to recommend?

Main reason is to get the front wheel off the ground enough to allow it to spin while cleaning so not looking for a stand that might obstruct access as I struggle enough to get my hand past the discs and ABS sensor as it is.  ::)

Would prefer a stand that maybe inserted through the hole in the axle rather than one that balances precariously under the fork legs but not sure if this is even an option or not and thinking about it would prohibit my taking the front wheel off so defeats the object I guess!

Would be nice to have a shorter one rather than a longer one as the front wheel is pretty close to the garage door and it would be good to use it with the doors closed if possible.

Oh and aluminium would be nice and...and... ;)

Saw a white one propped up against the wall on a brief visit to BMW Warwick this morning but stupidly didn't take much notice as all my other enquiries (SatNav cradle, wiring harness, BMW emblem, accessory socket etc.) seemed to draw a blank disinterest anyways and I just wanted to get out of there  :-\

Any recommendations please?

Thanks & kind regards,

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Reserve fuel capacity/distance to empty?
« on: March 28, 2023, 08:38:47 am »
Hi there,

Just about ready to do only the second fuel fill since I bought the bike and last time ran it down until the computer indicated 0 miles to empty before filling it up with £38 worth of VPower as the previous owner used to use any old low octane fuel but I was wondering when the computer reads 0 miles to empty if that really means what it says or whether there is a reserve amount of fuel still in the tank at that point?

I know that in the car I can drive around showing 0 miles to empty for at least 20 miles until my nerve gives out looking for that elusive Shell garage but does the same apply to the bike?

Traditionally bikes have always had a reserve amount and in the manual it states 24 litre capacity with 4 litres in reserve so I am guessing I could ride up to a further 20 miles or thereabouts if need be with the computer showing 0 miles to empty?

Not that I would make a habit of it but always good to know.

Really pleased with fuel economy so far with the computer indicating 47.8mpg overall having ridden 208 miles with 33 miles showing to empty since the previous fill meaning I am on target for around 250 miles to a tank.

On my old Thunderace I would be on the lookout for a garage after about 120 miles on average never wanting to push further than 150 miles just in case I came spluttering to a halt. Not that I ever did of course but knowing I can now ride a hundred miles more than before is a nice feeling!

Thanks & kind regards,
-=Glyn=-
