GS-911 BMW Diagnostic Tool

EuroKClub has a number of members who own one of the amazing GS-911 diagnostic tools for BMW motorcycles, a specialised diagnostic system consisting of an intelligent electronic interface in combination with Windows PC software.

Also available is mobile software for most mobile phones, including Android and BlackBerry and in the later WiFi versions, also iPhones.

This makes the tool portable enough to take on any trip and it can be used on any number of motorcycles in the Emergency Functionality, or 'get-you-home' mode.

All of the information on the GS-911 can be found on the Hexcode website at http://www.hexcode.co.za

Who has a GS-911?

The locations of members with a GS-911 and who are prepared to offer assistance to other members are shown in RED on the members' map in the Who's Who section and they are also listed at the bottom of this page.

Please read the list at the bottom of this page about who can or will do what for other members and remember, these are expensive, personal tools bought for personal or professional use so please treat the members with respect and also respect their terms of use and any charges levied. There is a difference between being helpful and being taken for a ride, as it were!

What can the GS-911 do?

This depends on which version you have; the Enthusiast version or the Professional version.

Both versions operate in the Emergency Functionality mode on an unlimited number of BMW motorcycles (depending on GS-911 Model and age of device) and can perform, at the roadside, all the operations shown below:

Emergency Functionality

Read ECU information (ALL controllers)
Read/Clear Fault Codes (ALL controllers)
Read & Display Real-time Values (ALL engine controllers)

The Enthusiast version will also operate in Service & Maintenance mode on up to 10 individual VIN numbers and will perform all diagnostic functions.

The Professional version will operate in Service & Maintenance mode on an unlimited number of VIN numbers and will perform all diagnostic functions.

Service & Maintenance Functionality

Service Reminder re-setting
All other diagnostic functions

What can the GS-911 do for you?

If you have a problem with your bike, the least that you can expect from a GS-911 will be a read out of any fault codes stored in the bike's memory, the storing of these codes off the bike for future use and the clearing of these codes if you wish. This takes only a few minutes and can be done at the roadside, on a meet-up for instance.

Taking a little longer, the GS-911 can also display and store real-time values of almost any of the parameters of the bike, from engine speed, exhaust gas analysis via the O2 sensor, throttle position via the throttle position sensor etc. This is a really powerful tool and one, quite frankly, that any long term owner of a BMW should never be without.

As an example of the power of this device, when my K1200S was suffering from an idle speed of 5,000rpm (and ultimately 11,000rpm), I would never have discovered the root cause of the problem (sticking throttle plates/spindles) without my GS-911!

It told me that with the twist-grip closed, my throttles were open by 4%. A member in Canada had an identical K1200S and a GS-911 and within minutes of me posting the settings he had connected his GS to his bike and confirmed that if he opened the twist-grip till the Throttle Position Sensor was reading 4%, his no-load idle shot up to 6,000 rpm! Problem solved, new throttle bodies fitted and all was well thank you very much Deeks (Markus) off the old site.

What are Real-time Values?

Real-time values are the actual values read via the OBDC connector AS THEY HAPPEN, either with the engine running or off and with the bike stationary or moving.

On the K1300S, this is the list of real-time values that can be read in the Emergency Functionality mode, in other words, by any of the GS-911's shown below. This list varies by bike controller type.

More detailed work?

Need More? Once we get as far as cancelling service reminders and more detailed service and maintenance routines, not only is this restricted to those members who have the Professional version but is also getting into the area of detailed service work and you should expect to pay accordingly for such services.

To find out which model of bike is covered by which model of tester and the functions it can perform see the Function Chart on the Hexcode website here....

http://www.hexcode.co.za/products/gs-911/function-chart

Depending on your bike model, most of the devices owned by members will be able to perform these tests. This applies to the later BMW models with the round on board diagnostics connecter (OBDC). Older bikes with the flat, 3 pin connector need an adaptor.
