Rheumy eyes!
« on: January 18, 2021, 01:04:12 pm »
I know that certain things are inevitable with advancing years but there is one thing that really pees me off when it comes to biking, watery eyes. This is a serious and ongoing problem and wearing glasses inside the old helmet just makes it worse because you can't just pop the visor open and have a quick wipe with the glove.

I've tried almost everything to stop the old peepers weeping uncontrollably, helmet vents open and closed, visor tight shut or cracked open, rubbing a cut potato on the eyeballs, Bob Heath visor spray instead of Optrex but the only that works is riding with my eyes closed. Which explains a lot...

Is it due to temperature, airflow (no, I think you've said), amount of light, pollen count, different helmet?
Does it happen off the bike? If so, what are the similarities in other situations?

I'm definitely riding in front in you next time we're out.  Even if you can't quite make out who it is.  :P

If you don't get it indoors in front of the telly then you possibly need to give yer eyes a sealed environment. Try borrowing an open or MX helmet and full goggles. See if that works.

Clean visor? Perhaps if there are a couple of pigeons squashed on it then your brain is trying to focus close-up and getting confused :P.

But as Neil Armstrong says above, normally it's a draft that makes mine water on a cold day. That and cutlery.

Also yeah, when you've been jabbed, left, right, jab, and so forth, maybe ask an optician to poke about a bit!

EDIT: Or maybe you've been reading too much Rumi. That was my first thought.

Hmm! The problem with a sealed environment is that a) the visor fogs even with a PinLock visor and b) I tend to suffocate.

Off the bike, windy weather causes it, but not all the time. Maybe its an airflow round the spec lenses thing.

Don't suffer fron hayfever ever since I was diagnosed with late onset asthma about 20 years ago.

One cause can be dry eyes...and I can see that through helmet draught might be drying out the old eyeballs, but why don't I get it sitting in front of a blazing log fire.

Need to go to SpecSavers anyway but just not while the Covidiots are out and about.

i'm a big fan of fairy liquid on the inside of the visor, only lasts a few weeks at a time but great when on and cheap too, has to be the original green stuff mind, also works on glasses for the same time frame.
when i'm up the mountain on the quad with no helmet i would have major issues with the wind watering my eyes which i think is your problem, i don't wear glasses but a mate who emigrated a while back visited home and presented me with a pair of harley davidson goggles which you pull on over your head with an elastic band round them. goggle part has rubbery foam "gasket" type seal around the eyes. well they kicked about the house for a good while as i didn't know what to use them for, then one day the penny dropped and i tried them on the quad...awesome job.
no more, and i mean never watery eyes through heat or cold or even rain.... i am on that quad in all seasons and weather.
should be no problem with an open face helmet don't know about full face.
worth a try i think.

I want a farm.

Also Brian are you drunk when this is happening? I seem to have developed intermittent either cat or alcohol intolerance and it's causing dry eyes.
If you've got an alcoholic cat it's probably twice as bad! Or maybe as bad squared!

Hm. Have you changed diet lately? More eggs? Less gravel? Gut bacteria controls everything from allergies to the LIBOR.

Hyco San Shield eye drops for dry eye, might fix it. My other half had watery eyes for ages, found this stuff was the best thing for it. Must be the Shield, not the other versions.

Oops. Yes!
I was thinking more of whereever the rider in front goes, you tend to follow.

Thank you for that Andy. I shall get my friendly shopping fairy to take a look in Boots.

Nothing else has changed apart from being 10 years older than I was a couple of years ago.

Diet? Wine, beer! Nothing changed.

Goggles? They would have to be prescription because specs and goggles inside a flip-front might be aninteresting combo. Although I am gradually getting long-sighted and would be happy to drive the car at about 50, riding is not on the cards without the glasses (and is illegal anyway, car or bike). I have a pair of industrial goggles I carry on tour as I buggered my visor in Germany years ago and had to ride for miles to get a replacement, not nice and bloody dangerous to boot.

Open face? Haven't ridden in one of those since 1970 and definitely wouldn't do it at K speed!

The misting is only a problem with a totally sealed helmet as the pinlock keeps the visor clear under 'normal' (i.e. eye-watering) circumstances.

I wear a prescription version of these at work. Got company to pay for them because normal safety classes steam up with facemasks and both are mandatory so they couldn't complain. I've worn them under a helmet when I mislaid my normal glasses. They worked fine.
