Moving to NZ - take K1300S?
« on: April 18, 2019, 08:13:23 pm »
Planning to move to NZ in August. Thinking of taking the K1300S Motorsport with me. Depends on how much it will cost to ship with my other household goods. I could sell here and buy there but no doubt I will lose lots on the sale and even then I doubt there will be many Motorsports with panniers, sat nav and less than 4000 miles for sale in NZ.

Anyone moved their bike abroad?

Anyone ridden in NZ?

I know German cars are very expensive in Australia, so maybe German bikes are expensive in New Zealand! :)

If the above holds true then take it. Worst case you part ex it for a cheaper Japanese bike!

When taking a bike into Japan, costs are reasonable PROVIDING it is pre - 2004 (i.e. around £1,600 per bike for local testing/modifications and registration). Post 2004, the costs are nearer £6,000 to put on the road there.

I understand that for Australia, all asbestos must be removed form the bike, so typically all brake/clutch friction components and even gaskets must be replaced with items certified as asbestos free.

This might not help much for New Zealand, however I doubt that the process would be low cost in any event and any losses on sale/repurchase locally might be insignificant compared to the cost of import and registration.

The Company who handle your shipping for household goods should be able to obtain a vehicle specific quote for you, for which the vehicle's VIN number etc. will be required. Certainly in my case Abels (abels.co.uk) have been really helpful. Our contact at Abels is Rebecca Pritchard (RebeccaPritchard@abels.co.uk).

I hope that this might just help!

Attractive as it sounds, make sure you know to the last penny (or whatever theyuse down there) what it is going to cost to pack, move, import, register and get on the road.

Import duty and VAT are the big ones, depending on local customs and age of bike.

I know the roads are good with great scenery in NZ but whether a K will feel at home, I'm not sure.

Don't recall seeing any members from there in here. That might be a clue... ;D

Great advice, but I'd suggest you also cost up an alternative replacement in NZ. While it'd be great to own one of the very few K1300S MotorSports out there,  if it cost you twice the price of a new "something else", would it realy be worth it?

Go here...

https://nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/importing-a-vehicle/

...follow the links. Simples!

And, even more interesting is this...

http://www.bmw-motorrad.co.nz

...which seems to suggest that The Big K isn't imported. That makes me wonder if the K13 ever was. And if it wasn't, what chance of getting it serviced and mended properly, bearing in mind it can be a hit and miss affair in UK.

Strange, the BMNZ site Ilooked at only had S, R F and G models under the heading 'Our Models'...

Definitely easier to sell it and buy something when I arrive. But I am enjoying the K1300S.

But not on the Home heading of Models, I lost interest and bought a Kwacker at that point...

Looking at bikes for sale in NZ I found a dealer with a new GSXR 750. They are no longer being sold but they still have some stock. 25% discount so under £8k. (I used to have a GSXR as well as the K1300S until an incident on track). Seems like too much of a good bargain to pass up on the opportunity and won’t have to worry about transporting the BMW.

Good solution all round!

Does that mean there's a 'Motorsports with panniers, sat nav and less than 4000 miles' for sale in the UK now?
You may find some interest on the forum with such a low mileage beast...

Haha I was about to post the same!

And good work! 8k for a new proper bike sounds lovely.
