LT - All generations / Top box rack install
« on: May 11, 2017, 10:51:32 am »
I've just finished installing an BMW OEM rack off a later model bike to our March 2000 K1200LT.
After lining up the rack by eye the support legs were marked out on masking tape with a pencil, next I applied some of the other half's almost fully used (saved from the bin) lipstick to the bottom of the legs. Then applied the rack to the marked out masking tape, which left a perfect template to drill the 6.5mm holes vertically into the top cover. A further hole of 14mm was marked and drilled centrally under the front rail to facilitate the high level brake light wiring to the inside of the top cover. The rack was then attached by using the supplied 6mm x 30mm Allen head Fillister  bolts and original spacers.
According to the technical documentation the electrical connectors and wiring were not fitted to models before July 2000 after which the connector is fitted behind the lower cover of the vanity mirror.
After removing the interior light cover and a little tugging on the wiring loom I discovered two cables taped to the light cables which were the correct colours for the brake light circuit. (Grey/yellow trace (+) & brown (-)).
These were joined using insulated  cable connectors to the chopped off existing connector.  (Purple (+) & orange (-). The vanity mirror & light were refitted, the box closed. All ready to go.

Just e-mailed Sherlock with regards to the gearbox, exchange or rebuild.

Motobins haven't anything this modern and won't rebuild the unit although they think they can get most parts, bearings, seals etc.

Motorworks next on list

Thanks for the info Niall,

I think the ratios were changed at the bevel drive rather than the gear ratios, possibly 2004 with the facelift model having more power than the earlier models.

Cheers

Why not get your box rebuilt?

That's the plan but trying to find a quick fix 1st as I've no other vehicle at present and having to carry various tools to different jobs is a real pita.

Motorworks estimate £650 for a secondhand unit if they have one.
Motobins will exchange the transmission unknown £.

Both firms are Monday-Friday outfits nowadays to speak to a human. There are a few on e-bay in the states but customs & imports are very pricey when added to the shipping costs. Still twice the price of a standard K1200 or K1100 transmission. The more I look into it it seems like a common failing like the final drives, just a matter of luck to which and when.

Cheers for the input though, sparky

Tyres / Re: replacement tyres
« on: November 15, 2015, 01:36:10 pm »
I've been using Universal Tyres for the last 15 years or so. They've always have been competitive to buying tyres of the Internet normally matching prices and including fitting, valves & balancing to loose wheels.
They are also within a group which own Round & Black and Watling tyre services.
Just had fresh new rubber fitted to the K1200LT for £204 front & rear Avon storms 3D XM's prior to the transmission failure yesterday. These replaced the earlier Avon Storm II Ultra's which had 9500M on them, and only replaced due to the cupping of the front tyre which was giving me vibration issues at speed and under deceleration.

Disclaimer
I've got no association with this company other than as a satisfied customer.

Looking for a replacement transmission for a 2000 K1200LT. Year 2000+ I think all years the same.
Mines just failed at 65000 M. Possibly input bearing and selectors. Reasonable money available for the right one.

Stena ferries have at last set up this year's special rates for motorcyclists travelling to Europe using the offer code "MC15" ,which gives a good discount for this year.
For example I was looking last month for a crossing in May and the cheapest fare with 1 overnight cabin standard return was £112.00.

This month with the offer code the price is £85.00 quite a saving, and with special rates of £79.00 return on world superbike events in Europe.
